Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Phyllis Kennemer
Little Honey Bear couldn't sleep. The moon was shining bright as day and it was smiling right at him. Little Bear rushed into the glittering snow-filled woods to go visit his friend, the moon. Along the way he met Lily Longears and Tiny Mouse, who joined him on his journey. They found the silvery path that led across the frozen meadow and joyfully anticipated having tea with the moon upon their arrival. But the way to the moon was much longer than they expected. Snow swirled around the friends as a cold wind whipped up and then the moon disappeared behind a cloud. The small animals decided to return home, but everything looked strange in the dark landscape. It seemed that the moon had deserted them. Then a large shape appeared. It was Mommy Bear looking for Little Bear. The friends missed out on having mooncakes and moonjuice, but they delighted in the golden honey cakes and warm milk served by Mother Bear. The moon smiled through Little Bear's window as he drifted off to sleep. Large, colorful illustrations accented with fuzzy white snow cover the surfaces of most pages. A comfortable bedtime story.
School Library Journal
PreS-Gr 2-Little Honey Bear ventures out into a sparkly wintry night with Lily Long Ears and Teeny Tiny Mouse, hoping to meet the bright and shiny moon. They set off for the horizon on their moonpath, although their journey is impaired by snow, wind, and a darkening sky. Teeth chattering, the shivering friends plod forward through the shadows as the night becomes forbidding and they realize that they are lost. Just as the moon's silvery light floods the woods, Mommy Bear appears and saves them. Over honey cakes and warm milk, she explains that there is no need for them to go to the moon-she is all around them. This beautifully illustrated tale includes glittery spreads of the snowy woods and the ambitious but apprehensive travelers. The charming, ultimately warm and comforting story is a tad long for storytime and is probably best suited for one-on-one sharing.-Andrea Tarr, Corona Public Library, CA Copyright 2006 Reed Business Information.
Kirkus Reviews
Beguiled by the friendly twinkle of the moonlight, Little Honey Bear sets off on a jaunt to visit the moon. His woodland friends, Lily Long Ears and Teeny Tiny Mouse, soon join him on his expedition, in hopes of having mooncakes and moonjuice. However, a sudden winter squall turns the joyful lark into something more ominous. With a chilly wind blowing, they find themselves disoriented in the suddenly darkened woods and unable to locate the path home. Respite arrives in the form of Mommy Bear, who soon has the friends safe and warm. Warnes's inviting illustrations gracefully illuminate the bewitching quality of a moonlit night, while the trio of friends is sketched with ultimate furry appeal. An overlay of glitter on the pages adds textural dimension as well as sparkle appeal for youngsters. Just the right amount of fancy to enchant young readers. (Picture book. 3-6)
