Editorial Reviews

Laura Ingalls Wilder
"I realized that I had seen and lived it all—all the successive phases of the frontier. . . . that in my own life I represented a whole period of American history. . . . It seemed to me that my childhood had been much richer and more interesting that that of children today even with all the modern inventions and improvements. I wanted the children now to understand more about the beginnings of things, to know what is behind the things they see—what it is that made America as they know it. Then I thought of writing the story of my childhood in several volumes—an eight-volume historical novel for children covering every aspect of the American frontier."—Laura Ingalls Wilder on the evolution of her Little House books
Rose Wilder Lane
"The longest lives are short. It is our work that lasts longer."—Rose Wilder Lane

Meet the Author

Laura Ingalls Wilder (1867–1957) was born in a log cabin in the Wisconsin woods. With her family, she pioneered throughout America’s heartland during the 1870s and 1880s, finally settling in Dakota Territory. She married Almanzo Wilder in 1885; their only daughter, Rose, was born the following year. The Wilders moved to Rocky Ridge Farm at Mansfield, Missouri, in 1894, where they established a permanent home. After years of farming, Laura wrote the first of her beloved Little House books in 1932. The nine Little House books are international classics. Her writings live on into the twenty-first century as America’s quintessential pioneer story.
