Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Maggie Chase
Luckily for us, in spite of the witches' brew recipe in Macbeth, eye of newt never really caught on as a soup ingredient. Otherwise, we might not have books such as this, with beautiful, close-up, colorful photographs of newts as well as descriptive but accessible text about these curious little amphibians. The blue, watery background of each page reminds readers of the newts' dual homesteads, while the little factoid insets add to the content of the book without creating too much visual clutter. The text is clear, and vocabulary words are formatted in bold. Sufficient context is provided for most of the words, but the author has included a glossary at the back of the book for additional clarification. The book also contains an easy-to-use table of contents, an index, and a bibliography. Even though "eye of newt" is not a big seller in our grocery stores, the author makes it clear that the newt population is not safe, threatened as it is by environmental changes and disease. Young readers interested in amphibians will find themselves poring over each of the exquisite photographs. Reviewer: Maggie Chase
