Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly - Publisher's Weekly
Children love the tension of a harrowing situation or two, and they love the relief that comes from the reassuring arms of a parentright in the nick of time. In one of the most delightful picture books of the spring, new artist Collington creates a precarious adventure starring Little Pickle, a young girl. After a typical mischief-filled morning, she dozes in her stroller, then dreams that she and Mother have switched places. Pushing Mother, who is asleep in the stroller, Little Pickle boards a train and contentedly watches out the window while the train rumbles toward an unknown destination. Reaching the shore, Little Pickle parks her sleeping Mother on the dock, climbs aboard a rubber raft, and falls fast asleep in the roaring sea. In a satisfying conclusion, she's rescued by friendly sailors and is finally returned to Mother, who is just waking up. Children won't tire of this story and lucky for parents it's a wordless one, so youngsters can manage it alone. (36)
School Library Journal
Gr 1 Up A wordless story in comic-book format. Through a series of softly colored illustrations ranging from 1 to 15 panels per page, children follow Little Pickle 's activities through the day. After a series of misadventures, she falls asleep. In a dream sequence, she loads Mom into the baggage compartment of a waiting train, and they speed through the British countryside. Alighting at their seaside destination, Little Pickle is propelled out to sea, alone, in a rubber raft. A tugboat crew rescues her, and engaging scenes of life aboard ship follow. The seaside voyage ends, however, when they come to shore and find Little Pickle's Mom still asleep in the stroller. Little Pickle wakes from her reverie, and they start home, with Mom pushing the stroller. The story presents a charming glimpse into the life of a memorable little character. Drawn with affection and delightful humor, the picture book is too long for the very young, but others will browse through it again and again. Anne Hoyt Sutter, Alexandria Library, Va.
