Children's Literature - Peg Glisson
Shy Little Pip wants to play with Spike and Milly but is afraid to ask them. When he spots a rainbow one day, he thinks that if he is able to give it to them as a present, they will play with him. Milly sees him unsuccessfully trying to catch the far-away rainbow and she and Spike offer to help him try to get it. They try standing on each other's shoulders, wishing, and flying up on the wind with a dandelion seed head to no avail. Without realizing it, Pip is caught up in the joint efforts and forgets his shyness. Although no gift is exchanged, new friends are made and the three scamper playfully for the remainder of the day. This simple story has an obvious message, but one which children need to hear: friendship cannot be bought. Peddler's illustrations capture the beauty of spring; other than color, the three mice look remarkably alike in size and expression. The shimmer in the rainbow and stars do not add much to the overall impact of this friendship story. Reviewer: Peg Glisson
