One of the Tough Enough for Toddlers titles, this sturdy book offers readers a healthy dose of information about visiting the doctor. Little Rabbit comes home from school with both ears and tail dragging; he's tired and one ear really hurts. He and his mother walk to Dr. O'Hare's office, where an examination and diagnosis follow. Then Little Rabbit is sent home to recover with a red lollipop and some purple medicine. This is a functional story, drily told, and page after page shows Little Rabbit in almost identical poses, which dulls the impact of the pictures. Still, his distress is real, and his story provides readers with a good opportunity to learn more about a potentially frightening experience. Ages 2-5. (June)

PreS Misrepresentations and stereotypes abound in this story about Little Rabbit, whose mother takes him to Dr. O'Hare's office when he has an earache and a fever. All of the adult characters continually tell Little Rabbit that the doctor will ``make you feel better'' and ``fix you up in no time.'' Little Rabbit is ill with what seems to be an ear infection, and one trip to the doctor is not going to cure him immediately. Mother and an obviously sick child walk through the city streets to the doctor's office. This image does not speak well for Mrs. Rabbit's parenting skills. The characters are cast in the traditional sex roles: doctor, carpenter, police officer, and truck driver are males. The only females in the story are Mrs. Rabbit, the nurse, and a classmate. This book's potential audience would be better served by Harlan Rockwell's My Doctor (1973), Ann Rockwell's Sick in Bed (1982, both Macmillan), and Helen Oxenbury's The Checkup (Dial, 1983).     the greatest book ever!

    this was my favorite book when i was little. the library actually bought another copy cause i always had it checked out! i can't wait to read it to my son!
