Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Debra Lampert-Rudman
Eric Kimmel's spicy retelling of Little Red Riding Hood even comes with its own warning label. On its verso page, a "Note from the Author," we learn "some people love to eat hot chili peppers. Chili eating contests take place all over the world—even though contestants sometimes end up in the hospital." Little Red Hot is a tiny Texas gal who loves eating hot peppers all day long—even in her birthday cake—and keeps a fire-extinguishing bucket of water next to the stove . When her Grandma is sick, Little Red Hot bakes the World's Hottest Pepper Pie—so hot it bakes itself—to "knock out the germs". Setting off for Grandma's on her pony, she is warned by Pecos Bill and the cowboys to beware of Senor Lobo (The Big Bad Wolf). Interestingly, Pecos Bill was warned by Three Little Tamales—the title of one of Kimmel's earlier Southwestern-flavored retellings. Senor Lobo pretends to be sweet Senor Coyote but Little Red Hot has a great surprise for him when finally meeting him in Grandma's bedroom. Readers will cheer for swift Grandma and sharp Little Red Hot. Older readers and aspiring chefs may enjoy the illustrated pepper heat-level chart, as well. Huliska-Beith's gouache, acrylic, and colored pencil collage illustrations lend a vibrant feel to the classic story; each one a "peppery" page-turner. Reviewer: Debra Lampert-Rudman
