Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
As with many tales handed down for generations, there is usually a message or lesson imparted to kids. Little Red Riding Hood is a classic example. When Little Red Riding Hood learns that her grandmother is not feeling well she decides to take a picnic to cheer her up. Her mother warns her not to stray from the path, but a wily wolf with honeyed words encourages her to leave the path and pick some flowers for her ailing grandmother. Meanwhile he races off to the house where he plans to gobble up grandmother, Little Red Riding Hood, and the picnic lunch. When Little Red Riding Hood discovers that her grandmother looks oddly like the sly wolf she met along the path to her house, she manages to outwit him and rescue her grandmother from the locked closet. The message is still there, don't talk to a stranger, and stay on the straight and narrow path; but the gruesomeness of other versions—gobbling up of grandmother, rescue by the woodman and the slaying of the wolf are not part of this version. It makes it more appealing for younger children and they will also enjoy the delightful watercolor art. A "Brighter Child Keepsake Story." 2002, McGraw-Hill Children's Publishing,
