Publishers Weekly
French artist Chauffrey paints the famous basket-carrying grandchild as a dreamy girl with almond-shaped eyes, elongated body, and striped stockings. Chauffrey limits her palette to ashy reds and greensand adds complexity with texture instead, picking out the wolf's fur, the shrubs in the garden, and the leaves in the forest with minute strokes of pencil. Against this Persian carpet of a backdrop, Little Red Riding Hood's red cloak jumps out with startling intensity. The heroine with the mischievous expression proves resourceful in the end, but readers may be surprised by how easily she is initially fleeced by the wolf. Don casts most of the storytelling as dialogue ("I wonder what that wolf has eaten today?" the hunter wonders aloud. "His belly looks enormous") and concludes her tale with a crisp, up-to-date lesson: "Granny locked her door when she went to bed. And Little Red Riding Hood never turned round to talk to strangers again." The enclosed CD is read by Imelda Staunton, who readers may recognize from her performance as Dolores Umbridge in the Harry Potter movies. Ages 3–8. (Oct.)

Atmospheric illustrations--lush, dark and mysterious--will lure daring readers into this retelling of a classic tale. Done in acrylic, Chauffrey's images hint at the ominous through small details that play with the mind. In her sinister forest, thorn-shaped leaves that resemble wolves' teeth are juxtaposed with tear-shaped ones that mimic Red Riding Hood's eyes. Thus the forest becomes an extension of the Wolf, hungry and watchful. Tiny brush strokes create luxurious fur for the "handsome wolf," and the stems of the meadow flowers are as delicate as the girl's innocence and trust. The detailed landscapes, with their intricate patterns, are evocative of classic Russian illustrations, yet Red herself suggests the pop art of Yoshitomo Nara, whose subjects are both seemingly innocuous and seductively dangerous. Interesting compositions play with space and depth in intriguing ways, as Red delves deeper into the forest, and the Wolf gulps Granny down. The latter is explicitly visible, Granny's legs kicking the air, while the rest of her is hidden within the smug Wolf. Don's text, true to earlier versions with a hunter rescuing Red and stones sewn into the wolf's belly, is clearly moralist, as the hunter receives cakes for his good deed, Granny learns to lock her door, and Red no longer talks to strangers. Gorgeously designed and packaged with a CD narrated by Imelda Staunton, this provocative telling is for young lovers of the gothic. (Picture book/fairy tale. 4-8)

PreS-Gr 3—Don's skillful retelling is grounded in the cautionary tale's traditional cadences and plot but refreshed with unique elements. While the wide-set eyes of the modern girl in the red cloak seem to take in quite a lot, she is, necessarily, naive. After describing her destination and the contents of her basket (lemonade and cakes), Red falls for the wolf's suggestion: "Could you take something else, something which will last a few days?" She stops to pick flowers. Chauffrey's acrylic and pencil scenes are composed of countless delicate strokes, giving the stylized trees, flower-strewn path, and furry beast individual textures that form a highly decorative whole within a palette consisting largely of red, green, gray, and black. The backgrounds contrast with the solid brilliance of the girl and her grandmother's red house, as well as the generous amount of white space that contains the text. Tilted perspectives add to the sense of danger and foreboding that is not felt in vain. This handsome wolf declines cake, and savvy listeners will catch the foreshadowing. Although the two leading ladies are gobbled up, legs last, the hunter comes to the rescue. He is rewarded with cakes, Granny learns to lock her door, and Red "never turned round to talk to strangers again." Imelda Staunton narrates an accompanying CD. Compare this version of the folktale with Jerry Pinkney's Little Red Riding Hood (Little, Brown, 2007) and Niki Daly's Pretty Salma (Clarion, 2007) for an interesting discussion of literary and artistic choices.—Wendy Lukehart, Washington DC Public Library
