Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
Little Red's Christmas Story by Sarah Ferguson, illus. by Sam Williams, brings back the cheerful redhead and her friends as they help save Christmas. When one of Santa's reindeer gets sick, Little Red's pony reluctantly takes his place while the others decorate. Copyright 2004 Reed Business Information.
Children's Literature
When Santa's little reindeer, Percy, comes down with a bad cold and cannot fly on Christmas eve, Little Red showers Roany the pony's hooves with magic flying dust so she can join Santa's team of reindeer. Santa invites Little Red, a red-haired little girl, to accompany him as well. She leaves her teddy bear in the care of Little Blue, a little boy in a blue coat, who must take the Christmas tree home and decorate the house. Once home, Little Blue realizes he has lost the teddy bear and goes out in search of Little Red's favorite toy. Without much suspense, the teddy bear is returned. In fact, there really is no suspense or sense of wonder in the entire story. It is all rather matter-of-fact. Ferguson tries to add life to the story with the overwrought expressions used by Little Blue, such as "Dingly, dangle disasters and dog-eared doughnuts!" and Little Red's remarks, "Whoopee! Whizzing, whirling walnuts!" There are adequate snowy winter scenes as well as holiday decorated indoor scenes. Buy only if you like treacle for Christmas. 2004, Simon & Schuster, Ages 4 to 8.

School Library Journal
PreS-Gr 1-Little Red returns, along with her friends Little Blue, Roany the Pony, and Gino the Dog. Their expedition to Christmas Tree Wood is interrupted when they encounter Santa Claus with a sick reindeer. Little Red saves the day by sprinkling magic dust on Roany so that he can fly and help to pull the sleigh. Young children may be drawn to the cutesy illustrations, but the treacly story is far from compelling. The overly long narrative is sprinkled with such awkward neologisms as "yippeedoodledan" and "fantabuloso." This is only for the most avid Anglophiles or hard-core fans of the Duchess of York.-V. W.
