Editorial Reviews

VOYA, August 2014 (Vol. 37, No. 3) - Dawn Talbott
Each of the volumes in the Perspectives on Modern World History covers a different significant event, from the twentieth century forward, in depth. Samples of topics covered include domestic issues like integration, civil rights and prejudice, to global problems like earthquakes, tsunamis and nuclear disasters. The strongest point of this series is mentioned in its nameā€”the perspectives it gives. A wide variety of sources and stances are presented for the issues covered so there is a great depth of information, as well as a variety of viewpoints. The introduction in each selection gives a clearly written overview of the events covered by the text, and then a world map is presented. There is also a fantastically detailed table of contents that provides the source type and a summary of the information located within. In addition, a short description of the credentials of the person whose view is expressed is given. All of this makes these books very user-friendly, such that a student or researcher can easily find the types of information they need. Each selection is divided into three parts: historical background, controversies surrounding the event, and personal narratives. The selections also contain great visual aids, such as a plethora of photographs, charts and maps. These books are not the kind that will likely be read cover to cover, but they are great for gathering information from previously published information regarding a particular historical event for those with a particular interest, or those doing research. (Perspectives on Modern World History) Reviewer: Dawn Talbott; Ages 15 to 18.
