Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal
PreS-Gr 1-With a frog as the driver, a variety of animals trickles onto a school bus. First, "a little goat/wearing his new winter coat" appears; then, "A pig in a wig" gets on, and others follow until, finally, "a sleepy sheep" climbs aboard. At the end of the day, they return in reverse order for the ride home. Paparone's colorful, detailed illustrations, a bit murky in places, are laid out on double-page spreads, providing lots for little ones to marvel at, both on the bus and off. The vehicle weaves through suburban neighborhoods and into the city as animal residents carry out their daily chores. Children will shout out the identity of the animals as the rhyming text describes them, and then happily chime in on the repetitious refrain after each animal climbs onboard: "riding the bus to school, to school,/riding the bus to school." Great for preschool storytime, a back-to-school read-aloud, or just a fun story about animals.-Wanda Meyers-Hines, Ridgecrest Elementary School, Huntsville, AL Copyright 2002 Cahners Business Information.
Kirkus Reviews
Roth and Paparone (Ten Dirty Pigs/Ten Clean Pigs, 1999, etc.) reveal a universal truth known to children, but oft-times forgotten by adults: the bus ride to school can be the best part of the day. As the peppy yellow bus zooms around town, it collects an unusual assortment of passengers. One by one, seven silly animals climb onboard. Roth's witty verses offer uproarious thumbnail sketches of the eclectic crowd, as "a pig in a wig," "a hairy bear," "a quick, quick chick," and others clamber onto the vehicle past the friendly reptilian driver. A pair of rhyming verses introduces each creature followed by a laundry-list review of all the previous passengers, culminating in the exuberant chant, "Riding the bus to school, to school, riding the bus to school." Once its merry charges are deposited at their destination, the bus patiently awaits the time to return them all back home. Paparone's vividly colored illustrations are a hilarious counterpart to the sprightly rhymes. Brimming with visual puns, her paintings are both realistic and humorous: from the antics of the passengers to mundane, yet slightly satirical, activities of the background characters peppering the landscape, she offers up a comical slice of life that is readily recognizable to young readers. An ebullient blend of singsong chants and giddy rhymes, this rollicking read-aloud tale is perfect to share with the youngest preschooler. (Picture book. 3-7)

Meet the Author

Roth, a former kindergarten teacher, writes full time.

Reeve Lindbergh, daughter of aviator Charles Lindbergh and poet Anne Morrow Lindbergh, first learned about Bessie Coleman in 1986, the 60th anniversary of her father's famous flight. "Bessie was an incredibly brave person who was hardly noticed, while my parents got so much publicity it was difficult for them to live their normal lives. I saw a crazy imbalance and wanted to try to set things right." Reeve Lindbergh lives in Vermont.
Pamela Paparone observes that NOBODY OWNS THE SKY is "about making dreams come true. My own dream has always been to be a children's book illustrator. In fact, I was ten years old when I created my first children's book. I dedicated it to Johnny Cash." Pamela Paparone lives in Pennsylvania.

    A DELIGHTFUL RIDE

"Here comes the school bus, beep, beep, beep! Step right up and take a seat, and ride the bus to school, to school, and ride the bus to school." Back-to-school excitement builds in this sing-song picture book written in a style reminiscent of "Old McDonald." The yellow school bus makes its stops, picking up friendly animals along the way: a little goat in his coat, a pig in a wig, a squirmy worm, a sleepy sheep, and so on. It's a delightful ride.
