Barnes & Noble - Kerry Dexter
From the opening notes of Stuart Duncan's fiddle on the title track through a haunting reprise of the same tune at the end of the disc, the evocative, mostly acoustic Little Sparrow, featuring guest appearances by the likes of Alison Krauss, Rhonda Vincent, Sonya Isaacs, and Rebecca Lynn Howard, finds Dolly Parton revisiting mountain memories of her past and creating a few new ones in the process. The 14 songs include her spooky original tale "Mountain Angel," the intimate evocation of heartbreak "A Tender Lie," and the lighthearted love song "Marry Me." She also adds a Celtic twist to "In the Sweet By and By" with noted Irish folk combo Altan guesting and turns ...

The 14 songs include her spooky original tale "Mountain Angel," the intimate evocation of heartbreak "A Tender Lie," and the lighthearted love song "Marry Me." She also adds a Celtic twist to "In the Sweet By and By" with noted Irish folk combo Altan guesting and turns Collective Soul's "Shine" into an Appalachian gospel affirmation. The album's most stirring moment, though, is Parton's thoughtful remake of her own haunting ballad "Down from Dover," which amplifies the original's heartbreaking lyrics.
All Music Guide - Barry Weber
Though Dolly Parton had been exploring her musical roots to various degrees throughout the last half of the '90s, her true return to form didn't occur until the release of the Grammy-winning The Grass Is Blue, and its 2001 follow-up, Little Sparrow. Critics and fans alike agreed that the latter record was easily among the best Parton had ever recorded, and that was certainly saying something. One of the leading tracks on Little Sparrow was its love-wary title track, which kicked off an album that was filled with enough heartache-related songs to cover three separate country records. Parton's lyrics use the familiar folk metaphor of symbolizing a bird as freedom and rebirth, and she looks to it wishing to escape a world that has crumbled due to a insincere lover. She grippingly moans, "Little sparrow, flies so high, feels no pain," while fantasizing, "If I were a little sparrow, oe'r these mountains I would fly/I would find him, I would find him/look into his lying eye." Besides simple escape, Parton also wants justification for her sorrow, singing "I would flutter all around him...I would ask him/why he let me love him then." By the end of the song, however, she realizes she is merely a victim of an "evil cunning scheme," leaving no other lesson to pass on to her "maidens fair and tender" other than "never trust the hearts of men, for they will crush you like a sparrow." By this time, Parton has realized that even the sparrow is a victim of man's evil, and it is only free until it meets up with a man, who will casually destroy it. It's an ingenious metaphor that, along with a slow, aching melody, and a flawless production and performance, helps round out what is truly one of the best songs Dolly Parton has written in years.

Even Better Than The Grass Is Blue!

This second installment of Dolly's bluegrass trilogy features more of her own songs. She seems more comfortable and several songs stretch out past 5 minutes. Her cover choices are more daring and she leads her backing musicians into music that seems more mountain than bluegrass.I would agree with those who point to Down From Dover and Mountain Angel as the most impressive numbers on the CD. Overall I feel this disc deserves 4 1/2 stars. (I purchased it as part of the Acoustic Collection 1999-2002 set.)

Dolly and Alison Krauss...what a great team!

Produced by Alison Krauss and you can tell. Dollys vocals are great and all the selections on this CD are perfect. The whole CD is wonderful and definitely one of Dollys best so far. Her version of ''Shine'' originally done by Collective Soul is by far the better version. The old Cole Porter classic ''I Get No Kick From Champagne'' is fun too. A few songs have a lovely celtic flavor that I really like. Lots of different type music done up in true bluegrass style that her daddy would be proud of which is why she dedicated this CD to him. I love that. It's a great CD and Dolly needs to work with Alison more often I think! More, Dolly, more!

    The Best She Has Done

I have been listening to Dolly for thirty years and I think this is her best album. It is so beautifully done. If you don't listen you will never know the joy of listening to a clear, and touching bluegrass album.

Outshines the Grammy nominated ''The Grass is Blue''

As a true Dolly fan, I was hesitant to listen to her latest recording, ''Little Sparrow'', since I wasn't too fond of her Grammy nominated ''The Grass Is Blue.'' I have nothing against blue grass music, but it's not my cup of tea. However, while the new release does contain some blue grass sounds, this CD is GREAT from beginning to end. As each song ended, I prepared myself for a disappointing throw-away song, only to find another totally listenable and enjoyable tune. As I am as fond of Dolly's song-writing as I am of her singing, I would like to see more of her own songs on her CD, but she did a fantastic job with the ones she chose. I was totally looking forward to her re-recording of ''Down From Dover'' and was not disappointed. This album, like Emmylou Harris's ''Red Dirt Girl'' deserves accolades from the CMA, ACM and Grammy's, to mention just a few. Her last recording to even come this close to perfection was ''Slow Dancing With The Moon''. Her choice for ''mountain music'' instead of just ''bluegrass'' music, was a big relief (again, no offense to ''bluegrass'') as it hits the heart more directly. It won't be relegated to the shelf.
