All Music Guide - Scott Yanow
Little Things is one of the more eclectic CDs to come out in the jazz field in quite a while. Some selections are funky post-bop jazz, featuring Tim Gordon on tenor and soprano. Some other numbers are crossover groove tracks, while "We'll Be Together Again" is given a big-band treatment with an enthusiastic vocal from Steve Willets. In addition, some of the other selections are pop music with the vocals recalling the Beatles. The core group, a sextet with two keyboards, guitar, sax, bass and drums, is augmented by horns and a variety of singers, though the majority of the performances are instrumentals. While the individual tracks may be predictable once the initial mood and groove is set, the overall program keeps one guessing. The set concludes with radio edit versions of "Venice Wind" and "Papa Was a Rolling Stone." Although often commercial, there are enough moments of interest throughout the program by Mr. Groove to make this CD worth checking out.
