Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Renee Farrah Vess
Blue Truck wants to help the bigger Fire Truck or Green Truck, but he is repeatedly told that he is too small to help. Blue gets discouraged until Yellow Truck tells him he is not too small at all. Together, Blue Truck and Yellow Truck remove a tree, and Blue Truck's happiness returns when he realizes he is not too small for everything. A level one Stone Arch Readers book, short sentences, repetition, and simple vocabulary are the focus. Young readers can practice colors because each truck is painted and named a color. They can hone observational skills with the The Pesky Pigeon game that involves locating the pigeon on each page. Colorful and round illustrations fill and extend beyond the pages, as the story plays out in text on the bottom left corner. At times, the black text is more difficult to read on the gray asphalt drawings than in the brighter illustrations. This perky book tells the smallest readers that they are not too small for everything. Reviewer: Renee Farrah Vess

Meet the Author

Melinda Melton Crow has been a first grade teacher for 15 years and a Reading Recovery teacher for nine years. She enjoys teaching children to read and getting to know each student and his or her family.
When she's not teaching or writing, Melinda enjoys traveling, gardening, and nice summer weather. Melinda has two wonderful boys with her husband, John. They also have two dogs, Buddy and Lucky. She currently lives with in Plymouth, Minnesota.

When Patrick Girouard was growing up, his teachers constantly scolded him for drawing monsters instead of paying attention in class. Many years later, he put all of that practice to good use when his first book assignment turned out to be about Halloween! Now he lives in Indiana and gets to draw all day. His work can be found on greeting cards, games, toys, puzzles, books, odd scraps of paper, the margins of newspapers, and his Mom's refrigerator door. Patrick loves coffee, has the strength of ten men, and hates writing about himself in the third person. Oh, and he was once struck by lightning and magnetized for a week.
