What People Are Saying

Oprah Winfrey
Goudge was the only one whose influence I was conscious of. She always described exactly what the children were eating, and I really liked knowing what they had in their sandwiches.

    A Good Read

The Little White Horse is a great read. If you pick this book up PLEASE don't let the beginning get to you. The beginning is kind of boring and the author uses LOTS of description (which can get annoying!)but the storyline is wonderful. This is a book that might not seem so fantastic while reading but when you finish you realize it really was a good book. I love everything about Moonacre and Silverydew, all the characters are fabulous (especially Wrolf and Robin!). It really is a good read but younger, impatient readers might have trouble with it.

    The book come alive

Many claimed that when they read it they could smell fell and see all the seens in the book which is very true. The plot and how it comes together is outstanding and the book is perfect for all ages, You won t be able to put it down and trust me you ll read it over and over again through the years.

    Wow. A beautiful story!

If you're a fan of Harry Potter, read this, since J.K. Rowling claims it's one of her favorite books. I abosultely was enchanted by this story the descriptions were so beautiful, and I was intensely wishing I was in the main character's place (her name escapes me now). The story is really sweet and the characters are loveabe, especially the lion (I was so surprised to hear he was a lion and not a dog!)

    Deliciously Descriptive

Elizabeth Goudge brought this story to life for me with her descriptions. They are so rich that sometimes they almost overwhelm you! I loved the story-line, and the ending was so sweet! I would've loved to be a girl like Maria and have all the adventures she had...

I first read this book as a little kid, when my aunt bought me a copy for my birthday because it's one of her favorite books, and we both share a love of fantasy. It's "boring" by some people's standards, but it's sweet, charming, mysterious, and a beautiful, involving world with colorful characters that really plops you into Maria's shoes. I love revisiting it, and since my old paperback copy is getting tattered, I'm totally excited to be buying a hardcover copy. :)

(The secret of moonacre)Robin is SO cute

The mental image I get from the book almost perfectly matches the cute guy I see in the movie. Plenty of action in the book and in the movie. Those of you who think differently are ruining the joy I get from reading about the things that other people think are interesting. There is no need to share your negative judging with others unless it is truly horrible.

Charming but slightly cloying tale of a young girl arriving at the family seat in the English countryside's version of Shangri-la. There are mystical, magical animals, a delightful mother figure, gorgeous gardens and glades. The ony dark side to this paradise is a group of dangerous dark-clad men who threaten, frighten, and steal from the denizens of the little village. Our plucky heroine is willing to stand up to them, however. A little too precious at times, but those who daydream about such settings will be delighted. And as always, Ms. Goudge's descriptive powers are awesome.

    Great Read

I had see the movie "The Secret of Moonacre", which is based on the book, and really liked it. The movie makes it seem more magical than the book, but all in all this was a good read.

    The Little White Horse

The language and detail worked into this book compete with the emotional connection I feel with it for the best part. I read this book, and re-read it again and again, and always spot something I missed the last time. The Little White Horse is a book I go to in the hardest times of my life, and it's always there. It is a fairy tale like no other. When I read The Little White Horse I am taken back to a world of governesses and maids, servants and warming pans. Each minute detail in this book is a gem not to be missed. I cannot recommend this book highly enough.
