Little Wolf and the Moon

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
Every child has sometimes asked "How?" and "Why?" This is also true of Little Wolf. Each night, he gazes at the moon and wonders. How does it move? How is it so large? How does it shine? Seasons pass, and Little Wolf grows, plays with the other cubs, and learns about the forest. Still he wonders about the moon. Meanwhile, the moon wonders about him. Stacey Schuett's watercolor illustrations are a comforting accompaniment to Marjorie Dennis Murray's story. A perfect bedtime tale, this book celebrates the spirit of questioning and encourages children to find out about the world around them. 2002, Marshall Cavendish,

PreS-Gr 2-Full of curiosity, Little Wolf questions how the moon shines, where it gets its light, how it stays up in the sky. Through the changing seasons, as the harvest moon rises, as the winter moon shines on new fallen snow, the little wolf continues to think of new questions. In a creative twist, Moon also looks down in wonder at the dreaming animal. In the end, Little Wolf comes up with his own unique answers. This gentle, poetic narrative speaks to the sense of wonder that children have about the natural world. The overall tone of reverence, of awe of the grandness of nature-"The earth glistened, the trees stretched tall, and under the winter moon Little Wolf felt very, very small"-is carried through in the rich watercolor illustrations. Schuett makes the most of the nighttime setting, with saturated blues and greens and dramatic use of light/moonlight on golden fields or bright snow. This is a story to awaken the wonder in all young children.-Robin L. Gibson, Perry County District Library, New Lexington, OH Copyright 2002 Cahners Business Information.
