Overview

Amazing Things Animals Do, a series from Owl Books, offers a unique overview of animal behavior for young children. Children are fascinated by babies, and in Little Wonders they discover the amazing number of ways that animal babies around the world are cared for and grow. From the tiny seahorse to the mighty elephant, a wide range of animals and their parenting behaviors are accurately described and delicately illustrated.

Children will be enthralled by red-billed hornbills that protect their chicks with a wall of mud, baby kangaroos that somersault to safety in mother's pouch, baby sea otters wrapped in seaweed cradles to keep them safely anchored and warm, and more.

The beautifully detailed illustrations show each animal in its own environment. A special Who's Who section at the back of the book features animal photos with more information on each animal's size, habitat and habits.

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Judy Katsh
Everything you always wanted to know about the babyhood experiences of penguins, bats, sea otters, meerkats, and many others is here in this slim, fascinating book. Each double page spread features a different animal family. Huge watercolors of each animal's family surround the brief text, which magically seems to include exactly the information readers really want to know. It's a great book for sharing, for solo enjoyment, and even for report writing, thanks to a couple of pages of facts at the end of the book.
School Library Journal - School Library Journal
K-Gr 3An introductory survey that focuses on child care in the animal kingdom. Baillie looks at 12 species from around the world and outlines in a couple of brief paragraphs how the creatures prepare for, protect, and care for their young. The numerous, large pen-and-ink and watercolor illustrations are serviceable, if not inspired. While not a resource for reports, this title is acceptable for browsing.Janet O'Brien, Mount Pleasant Public Library, Pleasantville, NY
