With each passing season, yoga books seem to be geared for younger and younger audiences. Here is one for toddlers. In each spread, a "yoga baby" leads the way, demonstrating poses from butterfly through a final "zzz" relaxation. The child in the picture "spreads his arms like a butterfly (flutter flutter)," "stretches her back like a cat (meow meow)," and so on. Varied images of young children of pre-school age accompany the simple text. Each spread also shows the animal corresponding to the name of the pose. A note informs adult readers that the book contains a balanced yoga sequence, and urges parents and caregivers to attend to particular children's needs and challenges in combining animal role-play with relaxation. Simple practice tips follow, consisting mostly of common sense directions, such as practicing with bare feet on a non-slip surface, and not placing weight on the head. Other useful back matter includes a spread of photographs of the positions in the book, captioned with both the invented child-friendly names used in the text and more traditional translations of Sanskrit asana names. All are accurate except the Savasana, or corpse position, which appeases the squeamish sensibilities of American children's publishing by substituting the euphemism "rest" for this pose's name. PreS-Toddlers can move along with the playful illustrations and simple poses introduced in this book. Each colorful spread shows a child in a yoga pose on one side, while the opposing page pictures the animal the position is supposed to reflect. For example, the first spread shows, "Yoga Baby" in the flying eagle pose, and the facing page reads, "spreads his arms like a butterfly." While a butterfly is depicted rather than an eagle, the idea is conveyed and the other poses are fairly straightforward. Youngsters are shown hanging down like a monkey (forward bend), breathing like a lion (lion breath), etc. The brightly hued backgrounds of blue, pink, purple, and yellow, combined with the large cartoon artwork, are pleasing to the eye. A note to adults offers some practice tips, and there is also a brief explanation of the poses.
