Overview

Sitting silently for the most part, occasionally standing to share an insight with the rest of the congregation, and a handshake at the end does not provide a sociologist much to study, acknowledges Dandelion (Woodbrooke Quaker Study Centre, U. of Birmingham, England). He looks beyond the process of silent worship and argues that the Quaker self-understanding of liturgical form has changed dramatically since its beginning in the 17th century. In the early 1650s, he says, early Quakers believed that time was about the end and God's realm on earth about to begin. Therefore, outward liturgical forms to help people between the First and Second Comings were now anachronistic, and only inward, personal worship was necessary among believers. In the 21st century, Quakers do not talk about the Second Coming, many are not Christian, and few expect life-changing experiences in their worship. Annotation ©2004 Book News, Inc., Portland, OR
