Overview

Pearl Jam's May 25, 2000, concert in Barcelona was only the second in the European tour. The band's rust still shows, although the performance is a big improvement over the tour opener in Lisbon two days before. Still trying to get the basics right, the guys only introduce six more songs into the mix which weren't played in Lisbon. Among the new additions are both songs from the 1995 Merkin Ball single: the B-side, "Long Road," as the night's opener and the A-side, "I Got Shit," later on. It's a very rare occurrence to have both songs played in the same show. Two songs which would become tour staples -- "Rearviewmirror" from Vs. and "Insignificance" from 2000's Binaural -- also get their first outings here. The Ten classic "Even Flow" gets played early and is introduced as "I Save Cigarette Butts for a Poor Girl" by Eddie Vedder, the first of many joke titles he would give the song throughout the year. A verse of "The Wrong Child" by R.E.M. is included at the tail end of "Daughter" on this night. Vedder in particular seems smitten with the city. He tells a charming story about meeting some local preteen couples before "Thin Air," a ballad about "new love." He's also flirting with girls in the crowd, exclaiming, "I think I'm in love" during the show-closing "Yellow Ledbetter." (He also proclaims that he'd like to make love with them all.) The missed chords and fumbled lyrics are to be expected this early in the tour. Overall, this show is not too bad, all things considered. However, it definitely is in the category of being for hardcore completists and people in the Barcelona area only.
