Meet the Author

Ian Fleming (1908-1964) was an English author, journalist, and intelligence officer. He is best known for his series of spy novels featuring MI6 agent James Bond codenamed 007. Many of the James Bond books were later adapted into movies and the film franchise continues to be popular to this day. Fleming's experience as a intelligence officer provided the background for many of the Bond novels. Fleming was also the author of the beloved children's book Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.

I don't know what this is - but it's not Ian Fleming's Live and Let Die - it looks to be a digital scan of a catalog of sorts - in German.

This was something completely different than what it says. Do not be suckered in, this isn't the Bond story.

If I could give a zero star rating, I would do so. One star is the lowest, but think of it as a donut hole rather than a star. As dozens of other readers have pointed out, this is a 19th Century German catalog of scholarly books of some type. Luckily it's free, so all we waste is a few minutes of time. Actually Nook Books does not carry Ian Fleming titles at all, just some overpriced high school study guides with no stories in them. There are still some glaring holes in what Nook has to offer. Does anyone at B&N read these comments, or are we all issingpay into the wind here?

This is not a book by Ian Fleming and this is not Live and Let Die. This appears to be a series of entries of books in German. Do not think that you will get to read a James Bond novel. The risk is not high in that it is free but it is not what you think it will be. You have been warned.

I am not sure why this German language periodical (Katalog der Handbibliothek) has been associated with Ian Fleming or James Bond; but I surmise that when Google cataloged the item it was incorrectly labeled. I have only given it one star because the BN system requires at least one star to post.

It is rather strange that the only book written by the creator of James Bond that can be found on Nook is crap written in German. It must be a SPECTRE plot.

Another bait and switch! This is not the Bond story. Looks like old German catalog or magazine?

Don't know what this thing is, but it's definitely not the James Bond book is purports to be. It's not even a German edition, in case you were wondering.

It's in German ?!?!?!?

This is not the book, it's 50 pages of references or notations, hard to tell since it's all in another language.

The subject line says it all, as others have said: this is a Google scan of a German book having nothing to do with Ian Fleming or James Bond (i.e., it's not a translation either).

Well I didn't pay anything for this thank goodness I is some sort of catalogue in German?????

Ian Fleming's second Bond novel is easily one of the best. The action is tough and violent, with Bond all but dead by the end of the book (the literary 007 usually ended up this way in Fleming's stories). The voodoo motif and Fleming's ability to make the scenery come alive through his writing add to the enjoyment of the book. If you've seen the Bond films and think that's all there is--think again. The storylines are dated--in this case it's lost pirate treasure used to fund covert Soviet operations--but Fleming's original stories frequently surpass the gloss and glitz of the films. Bless you, Penguin-Putnam, for re-introducing the world to the true James Bond--Ian Flemings original literary character.

Written in 1953~1954, this is the second James Bond novel. Although in many ways comparable to other action/adventure thrillers of it's era, Fleming's writing is generally superior to that of other's writing in this genre in that era. Many of the elements that seemed bold or risque at the time seem almost charmingly quaint by today's standards but Fleming's excellent books helped to move the genre forward to where it is today. It should go without saying that the book is much, much better than the film version. Much of the book deals with African Americans and some of the language relating to race is archaic but reflects what was in common use at the time. Fleming was a man of his times but his attitude regarding race was considerably advanced for his time. The book deals much more with character and human ingenuity and determination than with slam-bang action and will be a real surprise to people who only know James Bond through the movies. The book is well written, entertaining and interesting. I highly recommend it.

This book is fairly gadget-free, unlike most of the films, and doesn't need them. The story is tight, well-paced and the characters a lot of fun. It won't disappoint.
