Overview

West Texas blues, southern rock, country folk, border dance-hall tunes -- LIVE AT ANTONE'S captures Joe Ely and his crack bandmates doing their thing at the legendary Austin bar that lives and breathes music. A raucous cover of Robert Earl Keen's sadder-than-the-title tale of small town desperadoes "The Road Goes on Forever" opens the set, followed by a classic Ely penned blues/rock/country story of love "All Just to Get to You." Ely gives generous helpings of the cover and original tunes that keep the crowds pouring in for his live shows year after year. There's the dance-friendly border flavored "Nacho Mama" and contrasting views of west Texas life in "Ranches and Rivers" and "Billy the Kid." Ely also invigorates tunes from western song poet Tom Russell ("Gallo del Cielo") and Ely's Flatlander cohorts Jimmie Dale Gilmore ("Dallas") and Butch Hancock ("Road Hawg"). Ace accordionist Joel Guzman of Aztex stands out on "Oh Boy," a tune forever associated with Buddy Holly, leading flamenco guitarist Teye in a rousing Tex Mex/Texas-rock tip of the hat to Ely's (and Holly's) Lubbock origins. When all is said and done, you can depend on Joe Ely to keep the party rolling with the blistering LIVE AT ANTONE'S. --Kerry Dexter

All Music Guide - Campbell
Live at Antone's is Joe Ely's third release mixing his rock, country, folk, and Tex-Mex-fueled live show for an appreciative Texas audience. This retrospective was recorded by the Rounder label January 22 and 23, 1999, and showcases the heartfelt romanticism and storytelling on compositions by Jimmie Dale Gilmore, Tom Russell, Butch Hancock, Robert Earl Keen, Utah Phillips, and Ely. Pedal steel guitarist Lloyd Maines and the accordion of Joel Guzman add extra spice to this already high-energy performance. Favorites like "The Road Goes on Forever," "Me and Billy the Kid," "Dallas," "Road Hawg," and the obligatory Buddy Holly cover "Oh! Boy" are featured on another recommended Joe Ely live set.
