All Music Guide - Thom Owens
Live Art is a double-disc, 20-track anthology of live performances by B?la Fleck & the Flecktones, spanning four years in the mid-'90s. The song selections cover the group's entire career, ranging from new arrangements of several of classics to covers and seven previously unrecorded originals. There are a couple of vocals on the record, but the core of the album is Fleck & the Flecktones' dynamite instrumental improvisations, where they can demonstrate the true range of their eclecticism and talent. Of special note are the songs that feature jams with Branford Marsalis, Chick Corea, and Bruce Hornsby, who help spur the Flecktones to...

    more from this reviewer

    What is this Stuff?

Fleck and his band must be the most versatile musicians in the business. Is this jazz, bluegrass, rock, or fusion? I have no idea. I do know it is great music to edit my digital photos by. Bela is a great bluegrass banjo player but this format is probably where he has made his most lasting musical contributions. Live at the Quick is another fine live effort from the Flecktones.

    Awesome

One of my all time favorite CDs. Every song is great. I have several other Bela Fleck CDs but this one is the best. Makes me wonder why AMG doesn't rate it higher.

    Excellent Live Jamboree

This album continues to show a sophistication the more you listen to it. After two years of listening I keep finding new tracks which I find have inspiring capabilities. Excellent...for fans of easy to listen to jazz-jam in a unique but easily accessable package

    Must have this one

This is the album I put on when I'm working in my studio and want to get things accomplished. So much energy and expertise in one group! I recommend every album they have every made but this one definitely stands out if you have to buy one. Unforgettable talent and performance by each musician.

    Better and Stranger Than Fiction

I don't know...for me, it's a contest between Victor Wooten's ''Amazing Grace,'' but the performance of ''The Sinister Minister'' here is probably the best example of The Flecktones as a group--and I think Victor's solo here is actually better than that on ''Amazing Grace''--technically better, anyway...all the solos on this tune are amazing. Check out this album...you won't be the same after it.

    What the... ?!?!

All I could say when I heard these guys live for the first time... every single one of them is a genius, and the dynamic they have is without parallel. They are not like anything else you have ever heard, and they are one of the most phenomenal live acts I've witnessed. My favorite track on this album is, without a doubt, Vic Wooten's solo ''Amazing Grace.'' He redefines the bass guitar (actually, all these guys redefine their instruments). For something totally not mainstream, but utterly inspiring, Live Art is a great intro to the ''un-flecked.'' Too bad 5 stars is the highest you can go...
