George Gruntz's Concert Jazz Band is never short of excitement, spirit, and quirky soloists. On Live at Jazzfest Berlin, the 16-piece ensemble performs the five-part "Symphony for Jazz Ensemble" the first five selections, all by Rolf Liebermann and four other pieces, including a remake of Wayne Shorter's "Footprints" featuring trumpeters Marving Stamm and Alexander Sipiagin and the eccentric "Second Line Sally," which utilizes a catchy New Orleans parade rhythm. Along the way every musician has their opportunity to solo. One could call the music avant-garde particularly in some of the solos and not be inaccurate except that the performances usually swing hard, there are many catchy moments, and overall it is quite fun, both as a listener and obviously particularly listening to the boisterous trombonists as a player. Recommended.
