All Music Guide - Scott Yanow
Live at the Blue Note is really a two-fer since it has a CD and a DVD of the same performance. Arturo Sandoval, one of the great trumpeters, leads his high-powered septet on a variety of diverse material. The uptempo bop original "The Real McBop" introduces the audience to the strong solo playing of pianist Phil Magallanes, tenor saxophonist Felipe Lamoglia, Sandoval, and guitarist Rene Toledo. "Eastern Blues" and "Blues for Diz" together form a long and continuous segment that, after the solos, features Sandoval showing off his virtuoso scatting. Sandoval switches to piano for his ballad "A Lovely One" and "Surena," which has some rich Cuban melodies before becoming "All ...

Sandoval switches to piano for his ballad "A Lovely One" and "Surena," which has some rich Cuban melodies before becoming "All the Things You Are." Sandoval plays muted trumpet on the R&B ballad "If I Ain't Got You" and finally sings and indulges in some heated playing during "Rhythm of Our World," which gets the audience dancing. The DVD is better than the CD because the visual aspect adds to the music and there are a few short interviews included as bonus material.

Studio level sound quality and live performance energy

My wife and I were fortunate enough to have been at the Blue Note on one of the nights that this recording was made.(For some strange reason we had no idea it was being recorded for release as a CD.) When we heard that the CD was released we raced out to purchase a copy of the CD, and were completely knocked silly that there was an additional suprise in that there was also a video. When we listened to the audio I was overwhelmed with the fact that here was a recording that had all the nuances and finer details that one expects from a studio recording, and additionaly had all the high energy and passion that one usually experiences during one of Arturo's live performances. The technical excellance of his playing is almost a given, but what is really unique is the level of performance of his sidemen. Dennis Marks is probably one of the finest bass players I have ever heard during my 40+ years of professional musical performing,(I too play the Trumpet/Flugalhorn & Timbales). Thomas Cruz is the young man who plays the various Latin instruments, and his playing of the maracas on Surena is truly musical in every sense of the word. The piano player, guitar player and drummer also perform well, as they don't try to impress you with how many notes they can play, or how high or fast they play, but impress you in how clear and precise they are individualy, and how well they support Arturo by playing so tight as an ensemble. The musical highlite of the performance was the tune Rhythm Of Our World. This collection of some of Arturo's better known and liked compositions, begs the listener to ask how he ever played these tunes individualy. The arrangement is precise, logical, and musically satisfying, so much so that I long for another recording of a live performance for his next release.
