Barnes & Noble - David Sprague
Although this trio have come a long way since the days when they thrashed their way across the stages of Upstate New York, the Goos haven't forgotten those roots -- and judging by the overwhelming response the hometown crowd offers on this live set, the feeling is mutual. The band don't skimp on their hits, turning out suitably soaring versions of "Name" and "Iris" the latter buoyed by a hearty audience sing-along, but there's also a goodly bit of archive raiding, best represented by a ringing "Two Days in February," which also gets plenty of crowd participation. And while most of the set is given over to the more mellow mid-tempo material that catapulted the band into the mainstream, a handful of rockers -- like the Robby Takac–sung "What a Scene" -- impart the energy needed to keep the set a-movin'. The fact that the show came off at all will be something of a surprise to anyone viewing the accompanying DVD component, which reveals band and crowd alike being pelted with torrential rain from start to finish. A studio version of Supertramp's "Give a Little Bit" rounds out the package.
All Music Guide - Stephen Thomas Erlewine
Live in Buffalo July 4th 2004 is a double-disc set chronicling the Goo Goo Dolls' hometown concert on Independence Day 2004. One disc has the CD audio version of the show, the other the DVD video. About after two-thirds of the show was over, a torrential downpour descended upon Buffalo, and the group played the final third of the concert -- which featured the big hit "Iris," among other Goo Goo anthems -- totally drenched. This is about the most notable thing about the concert, which is otherwise a very professional show, capturing a band running through its repertoire cleanly and efficiently. Even when the rain comes down, the group manages to hold it together and sound like pros; if you're listening to the CD, it doesn't seem like the weather much effected them at all. On the other hand, the DVD illustrates just what a major storm the band weathered, and it makes for some impressive footage. Nevertheless, this is one strictly for the hardcore fans. [The DVD does contain band and engineer commentary for the show, and it's loose, silly, and a little rowdy -- but not too rowdy, since the label has bleeped out any profanity that's uttered during the course of the commentary.]

    Incredible Performance

The fact that rain kept pouring and they kept playing says something good about the Goo Goo Dolls. Not many bands would get wet in the rain and destroy guitars to please a crowd. These guys are the real deal. I only gave this set four stars because of the screaming of fans amongst the crowd, and Johnny needs to get a little closer to the mic.

Make sure you buy the right version however, because of the DVD. Notice "Label: WEA INT'L" is for the U.K. not the U.S. I've bought both versions.

    A CRITIC'S SAD AFFAIR

Stop robbing your fellow man of their own experience. Here's a band of highly talented musicians who are as "real" as your next-door neighbor. For the last 20 years, they have stayed true to their music and who they are. In spite of the negative comments, one must admire a band that would much rather tell their own story and show true appreciation for their fans than write pre-designed music for the sake of record and ticket sales. Before judging a music man's work, try and pick up a guitar, write your own lyrics and then go out and perform in front of millions of people and see how many lives you can touch. To the people who appreciate the gift of music, I recommend that you not only buy their CDs, but that you also see them LIVE. It is an experience you shouldn't miss.

The Goo Goo dolls:Live in Buffalo

This is an awesome cd. Not only does it have cool bonus features and a dvd, but this band is amazing live, i mean REALLY amazing! Their live performances are one of the first things that got me obsessed with these guys after i saw them live at the M1 (In Australia) festival in 2002. Unfortunately, this cd only came out last month here, but it has not left my cd player since.

    GGD'S get thumbs up

I was also at this concert. I traveled from PA to Buffalo for this show and it will be something I will always remember. They band put on one hell of a show for the fans. I have been to buffalo twice my first trip was for a football game and it snowed about 24 inches a few years ago, I made my 2nd trip for this show to watch a concert that had the harderst rain I have ever been in. I was standing in about 12 inches of rain as the GOO's were playing. They gave it their all and the fans stuck it out for a memoriable show. The Goo's played all their hits and even played a little of there older stuff "Two Days in February and Cuze your gone". A big Firework display was set off after the show and the Goo's gave back a little something to the fans and the city of buffalo. The were really appreciative of the fans sticking it out in such herandous conditions. The Goo's and the Fans/City of Buffalo get thumbs up on my end. The Goo Goo Dolls next album is due out in spring 05 and Im making sure I make another trip to their hometown as there is nothing like seeing them at home. The Dvd/Cd will be a great add for anyones collection. Thanks GGD'S

    I was there, baby!

Alright, people. You may wonder why I gave this 5 stars when the CD/DVD isn't avaliable till November 23rd... I have already seen the concert. I was there, 2nd row. It's amazing and I can't wait for it to come out so I can watch it over and over again. I recommend this for anyone who loves the Goo Goo Dolls. It's going to be perfect. Tracy
