Overview

Spencer Bohren, a folk-blues singer and guitarist who was 39 at the time of this recording, gives life and vitality to some older styles throughout Live In New Orleans. A throwback in some ways to the early 1960s, Bohren explores country blues, Bo Diddley's "Hoodoo You Love," and a few folk songs, a brief throwaway version of "Maple Leaf Rag," and even an a cappella version of the gospel song "This Body Is a Prison." His duo partner Jab Wilson gives the date a little extra color with his harmonica and Bohren's guitar is particularly expressive on "Mindin' My Business" and "The Sky Is Crying," but the emphasis here is on Spencer Bohren the singer and storyteller. This is a pleasing set that should satisfy fans of the folkish side of the blues legacy.
