Live in Paris and Toronto

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Carol Wright
Loreena McKennitt owes some part of her phenomenal success to her ability to craft songs at once intimate and sprawling, drawing upon many histories and cultures while always touching on raw human feeling. Conceived as a fund-raising project for the Cook-Rees Memorial Fund for Water Search and Safety, this two-CD set was recorded on her 1998 Book of Secrets tour and mixed at Peter Gabriel's Real World studios. McKennitt's first full-length live recording, it demonstrates that her talent is not just a product of studio mixes. A live concert may not have the refinement of a studio session, but McKennitt's fans won't be disappointed: The large ensemble of violin, cello, ...

A live concert may not have the refinement of a studio session, but McKennitt's fans won't be disappointed: The large ensemble of violin, cello, bass, piano, guitars, drums, and percussion invigorates her fusion of folk, medieval, Celtic, and Middle-Eastern themes with a spicy cross-cultural ambience. And when she sings, her voice rises like a phoenix. Featuring the three-million-selling Book of Secrets in its entirety, Live in Paris and Toronto includes nine more McKennitt favorites, including "The Lady of Shalott" and "Between the Shadows," each testifying to the brilliance and grace of this unique international star.
All Music Guide - Aaron Badgley
Loreena McKennitt is in her element in front of an audience, telling interesting stories about the songs and assembling a topnotch backing band. This is her first live release available to the public, and uses material from three concerts one from Paris and two from Toronto to put together a complete show. As with The Book of Secrets tour, the first half is The Book of Secrets in its entirety, arranged in the same order as the studio CD. This material is covered on the first CD, and it has never sounded better. The live performance seems to breathe new life into the tracks and some songs, such as "Dante's Prayer" and "Skellig," sound better than the studio recordings. The second CD is more of an overview of her career, featuring songs from her back catalog. Again, the tracks seem to benefit when played in front of an audience; in particular, "The Lady of Shalott" and "All Souls Night" are brilliant. The musicianship on this live CD is excellent, and her band is very tight, as though they had been playing together for years. The sound of the CD is amazing; while maintaining the warmth of a live performance, McKennitt is still able to present a crisp, clean recording -- a remarkable feat. Also worth noting is the packaging, which includes notes by McKennitt, wonderful photos, and details of how the whole package was put together. This CD is ideal for fans and is actually a good place for newcomers to start.

    Limited

Being from the classical music world, I look to other types of music with new ears. I like celt music more and more each time I listen to it, but there are limits. I can{t stand mediocre artists. And if the general music grounds are from regular to very nice, with strong musicians and rich mixtures of musical languages, frankly I can´t stand her fondness of repetition. She may master the harp, the piano, the singing, the lyric poetry but composing for herself...why, why repeat the motifs so, so much??? The prologue, Night across the caucasus, highwayman (despite the strong lyrics), Lady of Shalott... all ruined by complete lack of minimal development, variation, embellishments. If she were to a music school, she would never get a degree. Perhaps she feels the lyrics are more important but frankly, when I listen to music I am more concerned with music instead of words. And after listening to the so many times repeated tunes... what a waste of talent! I don´t understand why nobody complaints. Yes, music can be richer, folks, than what she offers. And 3 stars... I am too benevolent today.

Live Loreena is better than Studio Loreena

The first set of this 2 CD set is so different than the studio album, "Book of Secrets." The same melodies are still there, but there is more energy. If you liked the wild, reeling feel of the "Mummer's Dance" in the studio album, its even better in this live CD. It is faster and wilder. "La Serenissima" was never one of my big favorites, but it's beautiful on this live version. "Dante's Prayer" is gorgeous without "Alleluia, behold the bridegroom" at the beginning. "The Highwayman" is even more serene on this CD. Coming to the second set, it is equal transformed. "The Mystic's Dream" is transformed without the Gregorian chant at the beginning. "The Bonny Swans" is awesome with a wonderful electric guitar part at the end. And Hugh Marsh adds so much on the "Bonny Swans" and the "Old Ways". Ms. McKennitt's voice is like velvet on all the songs.

    THIS IS AN AWESOME ALBUM

Awesome album...what can I say? LM shows an outstanding performance live. This is quite a feat as the complexity of the music and the scales required in the songs would challenge the finest operatic diva. Look out for The Bonny Swans. The electric guitar will send any heavy metal fan into frenzy. It sounds awesome...I love this song...it was adapted from a 17th Century broadside ballad. The Old Ways is another truly moving song sung live. One gets the impression that it has some significance regarding Ronald Douglas Rees her late fiancée. If not for any other reason LM fans should buy this album to help fund the Cook-Rees Memorial Fund For Water Search and Safety.

    Awesome!!!

I have the studio recorded version of Book of Secrets and at first I thought it couldn't get much better than that, but then I heard the live version and it really IS the best! A definite must for any serious Loreena McKennitt fan!

    Another Great CD

Anyone who wants to hear beauty held in time, this CD definitely is it, especially with ''The Lady of Shalott''. Being able to see her in concert only backs up this statement, as the songs on the album are like hearing it there in the theatre. If only Loreena included footage to go along with it. But who knows, we may have the luck of seeing her out in the spotlight later, but for now this CD is a great way to tide us over until her next recording one day hopefully. Viva Loreena!

    Best!!! 'nuff said!!

Some people have told me that live music is not nearly as good as albums recorded in a studio. With this album, I must disagree. The songs on the 'Paris' album are much more clear and unique than I thought. LM's voice is amazing! All of the songs are beautiful! Recommended to any fan of World or Celtic music!

I have all of LM's CDs. There are no new songs in this live album but the experience is totally different, and of course wonderful. What a voice...yes, what a voice!!
