Barnes & Noble - David McGee
Recorded in various venues at various times (including "a short stretch of beach on Nassau in the Bahamas"), Kenny Chesney's first live album is a red-hot celebration of good vibes, good times, good women, and, well, the good life in general. Backed by his blazing road band, Chesney kicks it off with "Live Those Songs Again," which, with its stuttering, fuzzed-out lead guitar licks, has a strong Aerosmith bent until it unfolds as a hard, fiddle-spiked country anthem made buoyant by Chesney's expressive, slightly husky tenor. The arc of Chesney's live shows is heavily weighted to the spitfire rock side, guitar-driven and redolent with thundering drums, and he's an ...

The arc of Chesney's live shows is heavily weighted to the spitfire rock side, guitar-driven and redolent with thundering drums, and he's an engaging host and amiable vocal presence. Lightweight, party-hearty fare such as "Beer in Mexico" and the rowdy "Keg in the Closet" is greeted with the expected roars, as the band powers it way through crunch-and-grind, guitar-driven tunes. More sensitive feelings emerge in the reflective, good-old-days ballad "I Go Back" and in a muted, evocative take on "Back Where I Come From," both of which inspire in Chesney some nuanced vocal shadings that bring home the lyrics' poignancy. A lotta roar, a bit of introspection, hot guitars, and engaging warbling throughout -- buddy, that's some show. It's no accident that Chesney's one of the hottest tickets going.
All Music Guide - Stephen Thomas Erlewine
If Kenny Chesney wasn't going to save the album title of Live Those Songs Again for a career-spanning retrospective, he might as well use it on a live album, even though it does bear an unfortunate and unintentional double meaning when attached to a live album -- as is in, "Live!...Those Songs Again." Familiar though they may be, these Chesney songs don't sound as weary as all that, particularly because Chesney gives them the widescreen spectacular treatment of his stadium shows, which this 2006 live release fairly faithfully documents. In an arena setting, Chesney's AOR roots ring out loud and clear, to the point where he sounds less a country singer than an heir to '80s heartland rock -- an association he openly courts within the liner notes of the album, where he name-drops Bruce Springsteen, John Mellencamp misspelled as "Mellancamp", and Bryan Adams and is seen sporting a "Bruce Live 1975-1985" shirt. He pulls off these mid-America arena rock moves well. He's sometimes overshadowed by his slicked-up, pumped-up band. Even if Chesney does wind up disappearing into the atmosphere at his own party, it almost seems like he's playing the gracious host, letting his band and audience enjoy the show more than he does, because it's about them, not him. As such, this album is fun for fans: it's a souvenir to a old party and could serve as a soundtrack to a new party.
