Live & Loud

All Music Guide - Stephen Thomas Erlewine
Ozzy Osbourne has gotten more mileage out of live albums than any other hard rocker because he knows how to play the game. He knows how to make each record special, or at least a little bit different. Usually, this just means showcasing his new guitarist; at other times it just means showing off the new material. With Live and Loud, a double-disc set released in 1993, it was a combination of parading Zakk Wylde in a live setting and putting together a nifty limited-edtion package the initial CD pressing of the album was designed as a mock speaker and contained two tattoos. Musically, there isn't much new, outside of a couple of recent songs, delivered with skill...

Musically, there isn't much new, outside of a couple of recent songs, delivered with skill and professionalism by Ozzy's new band. Still, there's a lot to be said for professionalism -- there may not be any surprises, but there are no disappointments. Besides, Ozzy's live records are always enjoyable, since they have a more consistent set of material than his studio albums, plus a looser feel that is quite appealing. So, even if Live & Loud isn't a necessary album, it is an entertaining one.

    It's great....but

This is a great CD, the re-mastered version, but I'm really trying to find a copy of the original release with the 'metal' packaging, preferably new.

    CD-1 Excellent; CD-2 Lame!

Live & Loud is a real concert, just like all Ozzy live albums. You hear all the audience chants, Ozzy's insatiable need to scream the ''F'' word, and some great live heavy metal rock and roll. This collection flies like lightening and pounds like thunder for the first half (CD-1). This first disc is so hot it shines. The intro (snippets of great Ozzy tracks and cheers) will get you motivated, and your anticipation will not be underserved with great renditions of Paranoid (scorching lead off song), I don't know (best live version I've heard), Flying High Again (a classic performance) and the obligatory but equally sharp guitar solo and Suicide Solution, among others. When you get to the 2nd CD, it's a let down. Ozzy practically walks thru Shot in the Dark (get the studio version please), rushes thru Crazy Train, and slurs and chants his way thru the rest of the set. Sorry, I hoped for better. Total time is also just under 2 hours; short for 2 CDs these days. So: 5 stars for the first CD and 1 for the 2nd, therefore 3 stars overall.
