    Absolutely Vital Information

I am a person with COPD and first read Jane Martin's book, "Breathe Better, Live in Wellness" and related to how the people in the stories dealt with their lung issues. When I found out that Jane wrote another book about COPD I became so excited and I couldn't wait to read it. When I received "Live Your Life with COPD-52 Weeks of Health Happiness and Hope" I read it all the way through.and now I'm going back and reading it for each week for the year I am in. Each week I read one section and use what I've learned. "Live Your Life with COPD" covers everything - what is COPD, and so many ways to live with it. I need the knowledge that the book gives me, and the encouragement that I can live with COPD. It gives a patient as myself ways to cope when my shortness of breath is a little more than usual or when scary questions pop in my head and I need encouragement to get thru that day. I learned that I will have good and bad days and I am still learning its ok to have a bad day. Even though I can't do everything I did before my diagnosis, I can use the tips on how to live with COPD; what to do if I'm short of breath, taking my medications, coping with denial, anxiety and oxygen. I am not on Oxygen but if I had to be I've learned that I should not be ashamed to wear it. I use to be ashamed of my rescue inhaler but it gives me relief, so I use it. The book also teaches me how to talk with my doctor and with family members who don't understand; about how it feels to have COPD, my fears, and to find out how they feel. I recommend "Life Your life with COPD" and think Doctors should read it themselves so they know how it truly is every day to live with a chronic illness and how difficult it can be for young or old to live with COPD. I also think family members should read it so that they can get an insight of COPD. The best things that happened after my Diagnosis were Pulmonary Rehab and Jane Martin's books and the Breathing Better Living Well website. This book is a must read and it's teaching me that there is a lot I can do - and that I don't have to give up because I have COPD.

Must Read for Physicians and Patients Alike

"Live Your Life With COPD" is an outstandingly well written book. Jane has demonstrated a sensitivity for patients and has given both patients and caregivers valuable tools. These tools enable patients with COPD and other "terminal" diseases to cope well live their disease.

Physicians who have the responsibility for designating terminally ill patients would do well to read this book.

It is written in a style that allows a person to digest all the information and to use the book as a daily guide.

    Well done!

    Great go-to resource!

This book is a great resource for learning about COPD! I would highly recommend it for anyone dealing with the condition, either experiencing its symptoms personally, or observing the difficulties of a friend or loved one. This is a book that can be read cover to cover, or enjoyed by the chapter based on the week (as it is divided by weeks of the calendar year) or by topic (as it is also portioned into doses based on difficulties that may be more common during that time of year). This book is very well organized and uses specific examples and down-to-earth explanations to ease symptoms and answer all your questions.

    LIVE with COPD

Jane Martin has written a wonderful book, based upon the editorials of Jo-Von Tucker, a patient with COPD; Jane’s own professional knowledge of COPD as an RT; and includes some chapters written by a few other respiratory professionals.

I like the way the book is designed – if you want to read a chapter each week, you can jump right in and start with whatever week of the year it is. But (and this is the way I chose to read it), there’s also a content guide, so you can first read the chapters dealing with the basics of COPD, for example, and then go onto the chapters that talk about relationships, then day-to-day living, etc.

I was diagnosed with COPD about 10 years ago – I wish this book had been available then, when it was all so new to me, confusing and scary. The combination of a real COPD patient’s observations and of Jane’s professional knowledge make this book a must have for all COPD patients.

The “Your Turn” sections at the end of each chapter are a gentle reminder to take charge of our COPD and put into practice what that specific chapter is about. And the additional resources are excellent!!

Now I’m going back and re-reading the book, one week at a time, so I don’t forget how to LIVE my life with COPD.

I recommend this book to anyone who lives with COPD – patients, caregivers, and other family members. It would also be a great resource for any medical professionals to help them have more insight into a COPD patient’s daily life.
