Overview

Evaluate and interpret the full range of liver biopsy specimens with the fully revised New Edition of this practical resource! Two internationally respected experts examine the pathologic changes in primary liver disease as well as systemic diseases affecting the liver. More than 400 illustrations - now in full color - depict the appearance of every condition. Gut called a previous edition "the best and most authoritative manual on the interpretation of liver biopsies...A must for anyone involved in liver biopsy diagnosis."

• Correlates histopathologic features with clinical features to describe how pathology affects the diagnosis and management of liver disease.

• Helps readers resolve their most difficult diagnostic questions more quickly with copious technical tips and diagnostic "pearls" based on Drs. Scheuer and Lefkowitch's extensive experience.

• Examines all aspects of liver pathology: normal, hepatidities, childhood diseases, and neoplasms.

• Includes a glossary of frequently used terms and descriptions and a selection key references.

• Features an increased emphasis on differential diagnosis, to help readers evaluate entities that look alike.

• Integrates the latest advances in immunohistochemistry and cytogenetics as well as expanded coverage of FNA biopsy, hepatitis C, and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease.

• Includes 141 new illustrations that assist in the recognition and diagnosis of any tissue sample.

• Makes information easy to find and apply with many new diagnostic flow charts, decision-making algorithms, summary tables, take-home messages, and bullet points.

Editorial Reviews

From the Publisher
"A classic...Magnificently illustrated. The book belongs on the shelf of everyone concerned with liver disease."-Journal of Hepatology
"All aspcts of the book, production and contents are superlative."-Modern Pathology
Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Tammy M. Battaglia, MD (University of Kansas Medical Center)
Description: This is a concise introduction to liver pathology as well as an excellent bench side quick reference. This is the sixth edition since the book was first published in 1968.
Purpose: The editors seek to write a condensed text useful for "solving diagnostic problems at the microscope" as well as providing a concise introduction to liver disease. Liver biopsy interpretation is a difficult field for the general pathologist, making a brief but complete text a valuable resource. The author easily fulfills his objectives.
Audience: The book is intended to be used by pathologists, gastroenterologists, hepatologists, residents, and even by medical students as an introduction to liver disease. I find the book appropriate on all accounts. With several highly praised editions already published, the authors are more than credible with Professor Dame Sheila Sherlock referring to the text as the "biopsy bible."
Features: This book covers all aspects of liver biopsy pathology from normal, the hepatidities, childhood disease, and neoplasms. A new chapter in this edition discusses cytopathology of the liver. The authors have also added very useful "General Reading" references following each chapter to assist readers seeking additional information about covered topics. The glossary is a useful quick reference. All photos and tables are well chosen to illustrate and complement the written text.
Assessment: This is an excellent, well-written, complete, and concise quick reference worthy of being deemed the "liver biopsy bible." In this changing field, a new edition is justified and the additions of diagnostic cytopathology and general reading references make it a welcome update. This would be a useful addition to the libraries of both pathologists and clinicians in practice and training.
