Debra, Marcie, and Shannon, students in Intro to Education, January 26,2000 Mike Rose begins with his experiences at home and drifts into his grammar school years. Rose gives a personal account of how an institutional mistake left him unfairly on the vocational track. Very few students ever escape the fate that is decided for them by their test scores and teacher comments. The author takes you to several times when children and adults expand learning into a growing experience. He touches on the process of a teacher finding his or her voice in the classroom. I wish that all teachers were required to read this book, for it is inspirational and idealistic. My only criticism would be that a reader may get lost, as I did, in his seperate and detailed tales of many of his teachers and students. Overall, I would definitely recommend this book to those already into a career in education and for those who want to teach. Was this review helpful? Yes NoThank you for your feedback.
