Overview

Livin' Low marks the second release for blues guitarist Ron Spencer and his first on the Blue Wave label, run by brother Greg Spencer. For this session, Spencer assembled the seven-piece band Jumpstart in order to fully tackle jump blues with a contemporary tinge reminiscent of Roomful of Blues. The horn section is a welcome addition on these 11 tracks and features a guest appearance by ace saxophonist and House Rocker Jimmy Cavallo. The added musicians really push these arrangements over the top, especially on the cover versions of "I Ain't Mad at You" and "Fannie Brown," and the instrumental "Silvertone Stomp," where Spencer gets the spotlight to show off his chops. A satisfying disc from a first-rate guitarist and excellent band.
