Overview

Living Deeply transcends any one approach by focusing on common elements of transformation across a variety of traditions, while affirming and supporting the diversity of approaches across religious, spiritual, scientific, academic, and cultural backgrounds. Each chapter in the book ends with Experiences of Transformation, exercises drawn from wisdom traditions or scientific investigations meant to enhance your direct experience of the material.

Opportunities to actively engage in your own transformation and that of our world are woven into the fabric of your everyday life. Learning more about the terrain of consciousness transformation can not only give you a map, but can help you become the cartographer of your own transformative journey. Research over the last decade at the Institute of Noetic Sciences (IONS) has systematically surveyed hundreds of people's stories of their own transformations, as well as conducting over 50 in-depth interviews with teachers and masters of the world's spiritual, religious, and transformative traditions.

No matter who you are, where you come from, or what your current path is - whether you seek to transform your life completely or simply make adjustments that will add a layer of richness and depth to your life - exploring the many ways that transformation is stimulated and sustained can hold great power. Weaving together cutting-edge science with wisdom from teachers of the world's transformative traditions this book explores how people experience deep shifts in their consciousness, and how those shifts can lead to healing and wholeness.

Research over the last decade at the Institute of Noetic Sciences has explored in depth the phenomenon by which people make significant shifts in the way they experience and view the world. Focusing in particular on positive transformations in consciousness, or those that result in improved health, well-being, and sense of meaning, purpose, and belonging, hundreds of people's stories of their own transformations were included in the research, as well as in-depth interviews with over 50 teachers and masters of the world's spiritual, religious, and transformative traditions.

Authors Marilyn Mandala Schlitz, Ph.D., Cassandra Vieten, Ph.D., and Tina Amorok, Psy.D. - will begin conducting workshops based on the information they have gathered for this book. These workshops will blend the rigors of science with the deep wisdom of the world’s spiritual traditions. Drs. Schlitz, Vieten, and Amorok will offer key insights from the decade-long qualitative and quantitative research study, of how people transform their lives. The workshops will include rigorous inquiry, group dialogue, and direct experience about the kinds of transformations in consciousness that change a person’s worldview to one that is more connected to others.

    Transformative Practices Made Exciting

This book is certainly fulfilling its title. I look forward to reading it daily after spending some quiet time in meditation. The core of what I read each morning goes into my computer. The authors have done a great service in writing such a clear, inspiring, and informative account of their ten year research. I am already feeling the fruits of their insights.

    Take it on the road!

Our book group read this wonderful book twice (first time we have ever done this)! Not only is it a joy to read - the snippets of the conversations the authors had with people who have experienced personal transformation are wonderful! But it really does help anyone understand that having and/or creating a transformative experience for oneself is possible and, in fact, likely with a simple self-chosen practice (one of mine is cutting veggies for soup). Three members of our book group have created other groups in our community to study this book - they are on their 2nd set of study groups. Creating study groups for this book is a possible way for helping to create the "Shift" that must take place on this planet sooner than we all think....and that will only happen one person at a time until we reach the tipping point! Go for it!!! You will not be dissapointed. And the DVD is really great as well.

    A reviewer

In 'The Heart of the World', Thomas Keating writes: ¿...it is not enough to have transcendent experiences. We have to translate those experiences into daily life and into our humdrum routine.¿ The skillful researchers and authors of 'Living Deeply, The Art & Science of Transformation in Everyday Life' offer readers thoughtful teachings and practical tools for doing just this. While emphasizing the value of making one¿s practice one¿s own, the authors draw on the wisdom of respected consciousness practitioners, a wide range of additional research participants, and their own noetic insights to arrive at the conclusions they share. ¿The essence of living deeply is bringing awareness to the simple ways you can make your life and practice a more seamless and graceful partnership,¿ the book states. The beauty of 'Living Deeply' is its clear and expert guidance towards this end.

    Sharing Knowledge, Bringing Hope

Whether you are rushed and harried, wanting peace, bored and restless, desiring meaning, or balanced and relatively happy, yet seeking transformation, this book promises guidance. With amazing clarity and grace, it fulfills this grand promise! Based on decades of research and scores of in-depth interviews, the book has a refreshing objectivity. While others speak eloquently of one religious tradition, this book draws evenhandedly from a myriad of traditions and spiritual paths. While others often dwell on religious differences, this book illuminates and celebrates common insights. Even more importantly, you will find here, in readable and practical form, practices that will help you integrate your peak experiences with your ordinary life in ways that lead to personal transformation.

    Living Deeply

The approach to consciousness transformation laid out in this book is well researched and many of the spiritual truths presented will resonate with people from all backgrounds. I would most recommend this work for individuals who have some exposure to the study of comparative religion since it is a fresh approach but the reader will be familiar with the faiths and concepts being discussed. That being said, if this book is your first introduction to a variety of spiritual traditions perhaps it will encourage you to explore them more deeply! Some of the exercises at the end of each chapter seem repetitive so the reader may wish to pick and choose which exercises s/he finds most relevant or exciting to participate in upon their first reading. All in all this is an excellent resource to assist you in building a strong personal spiritual practice.

brought new awareness to my family......

I throughly enjoyed this DVD- I used the different transformative practices myself and found them very useful. I even tried them with my 9 year old son and he got a lot out of seeing the different teachers and their different looks, styles, and ways of communicating. The music, the visual images and the practices all complimented each other beautifully. I appreciate the work that brought these various perspectives together. This DVD touched me and brought new awareness to my family. Thanks to Barnes and Nobel for the discount. This was a great buy. GEM
