Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
As with other books in the "Earth in Danger" series, this title is a feast for the fingers and eyes. Dynamic full-page-plus photographs emphasize the theme of the text visually and emotionally, moving from crowded, busy, high-energy scenes in the opening sections to calmer, more peaceful images as the reader learns the basic tenets and practices of sustainable living. The book describes how our rapidly growing population and dependence on the ever expanding field of technology put stresses on limited resources for energy production and endanger the environment. It then explains the importance of conservation and sustainability in energy use, natural resources such as water, and consumption of goods and services. It follows up by describing ways to use less energy and minimize pollution in our everyday lives. Simple, informal language makes the subject matter easy to grasp. Interesting statistics and helpful comparisons offset in purple fact boxes support and expand the information conveyed in the main text for each topic. Without being confrontational or preachy, the objective, factual presentation of information encourages the reader to observe, thoughtfully consider and, if necessary, change personal habits to adopt a greener style of living.
