While some of the teen efforts described here may be familiar, the author also focuses on issues seldom addressed, such as dumping toxic waste on poor and powerless communities. The book includes quotes from green advocates and teens who consider themselves eco-friendly, as well as useful advice that will help young adults embrace a lifestyle that will positively affect generations to come.

This latest installment in The Ultimate Teen Guide series explores the diverse ways in which many teens are working to create and maintain an eco-friendly world. Teens from communities around the United States are represented, as are issues reflecting local, national and international concerns. Fourteen chapters cover key issues of living "green," ranging from basic lifestyle and consumer choices to animal welfare issues, recycling, natural resource conservation and toxic waste. Each chapter is approximately fifteen pages long and includes reference notes. The book ends with a multiple-choice quiz reviewing facts from the previous chapters, a selected list of books on eco-conscious living, websites of key organizations and an index. Using newspaper articles from the Internet and organizational websites, this book is an adequate, albeit lackluster, compilation of what it means to live in an eco-friendly manner. Visually, the book is uninviting, interrupted only periodically by black and white stock photos. The overreliance on secondary sources from the Internet is particularly unfortunate. The personal journeys of the profiled teens would be significantly more compelling if the author had chosen to interview some of them directly, anticipating important questions that a potential reader might ask. Nevertheless, this book may still inspire some teens to take action, whether as an individual or as a political activist. This title is passable for collections where previous volumes in the series have circulated.
