Gr 9 Up-These titles examine the social aspects of life, such as education, slavery, medicine, and the arts. Egypt devotes a number of pages to the pyramids, the afterlife, and the process of mummification; Greece highlights how the citizens' sense of responsibility and pride resulted in the success of the city-state. The majority of the articles in each volume have been excerpted from the writings of modern-day scholars, with a few primary documents included. Students will appreciate those entries that focus on leisure activities-the Greek Olympics, the Roman charioteers. The writing is clear and the few black-and-white illustrations are appropriate though not especially informative. The "Daily Life through History" series (Greenwood) is more comprehensive, while Milton Meltzer's In the Days of the Pharaohs (Watts, 2001) is readable and accessible and has excellent illustrations.-Joanne K.
