Overview

From the Eiffel Tower to Notre Dame, the Place de la Concorde to Montmartre, life in Paris is charged with elegance—from private homes and the varied architectural styles along its boulevards, to the quays of the Seine, winding streets, cosy bistros, and intimate restaurants. Gardens, including the Luxembourg and the Tuileries, provide an outdoor paradise in the heart of the city. Lavishly illustrated, Living in Paris includes an extensive guide to the capitol's best addresses; it is an inspiring resource for anyone who has strolled along the streets or dreamed of visiting the City of Lights.

In Living in Paris, José Alvarez provides the context-historical, literary, artistic, etc.-while Christian Sarramon and Nicolas Bruant provide 400 color photos of the buildings, the interior design, the neighborhoods, parks, gardens, shops, ateliers, museums and hangouts preferred by those who live in the city of lights. The book ends with a lengthy Visitor's Guide listing addresses, phone numbers and descriptions for hotels, shops, restaurants, stores and more for each neighborhood.

Editorial Reviews

Booknews
Originally published in French by Flammarion (1996, Paris). The English edition is distributed in the US by Abbeville Press. Full- and partial-page color photos are interspersed with text describing the features of Paris<-->its neighborhoods, interiors, parks and gardens, public facilities, and craftsmanship in fashion and interior design. A visitor's guide features a selected, annotated list of "the best places in town"<-->hotels, bistros, cafe<'e>s, antique shops, and artisans' addresses. The volume is too big (10x10<">) to carry along as a travel guide, but it serves as a portrait of the city and an armchair guide to some of its charms. Annotation c. by Book News, Inc., Portland, Or.
