Editorial Reviews

Publishers Weekly
Amelia was excited about escaping from her father's house to go live with her mother and her mom's lesbian lover in San Francisco. However, the 12-year-old soon discovers that having an assumed name, lying to her new friends about her past and negotiating the maze of complications arising from her mom's lifestyle isn't as much fun as she thought it would be. But when her father finally hunts her down and forces her to return home, Amelia is able to draw strength from her experiences to make a difficult choice. This first novel tackles some hefty social issues including racism, homosexuality, lawbreaking, personal integrity and justice. Though Salat's carefully worded treatment generates options for the reader, her style is constrained and lacks spontaneity. Still, this is a courageous, thought-provoking and thorough foray into some tough, worthy concerns. Ages 9-12. (Feb.)
From The Critics
Gr 5-8-- Capitalizing on such current issues as custody kidnapping and gay parenthood, Salat writes about Amelia, 11, who is willingly abducted by her mother. With remarkable innocence, trust, and resilience, the child secretly moves from New Jersey to San Francisco with her mother's lover, Janey. They create a new life while waiting for Amelia's mother to join them after she plants clues to establish her daughter as a runaway. The gay lifestyle is presented matter-of-factly; Amelia finds more warmth and understanding in her mother's nontraditional home than in her father's ``normal'' one. He is portrayed as domineering, intolerant, and determined. By story's end, after she is forcibly reclaimed by him, Amelia decides to support her mother's legal battle for custody, no matter how long it takes or how difficult it is. While her story may be well outside the experience of most middle graders, Amelia is a likable character who wants peer friendships, parental affection, and harmony. Her candid, youthful, first-person narration integrates such contemporary themes as children's legal rights, family values, social mores, and discrimination. --Gerry Larson, Chewning Junior High School, Durham, NC
