Children's Literature
The popular "Rookie ReadAbout" books are eXpanding in coverage and taking kids to various places around the world. The geography series focuses on states, countries and various ecosystems and environments. Living in the Arctic opens with a map that shows the Arctic regions. Photographs and teXt demonstrate and eXplain why the winter days are dark and short and the summer ones long and light. Pictures of the tundra and the Inuit show both an igloo and a sod home but not a town scene. The Sami are briefly mentioned but more focus is given to Arctic animals. The pictures are engaging and curious readers will want to know more about this region of the world. The book closes with a picture list entitled "Words You Know" that reiterates sections of the teXt, and there is an indeX. 2000, Grolier, $19.00 and $4.95. Ages 5 to 7.
