This coursebook is well organized and does cover everything from pronunciation to writing. The book, however, has some downfalls. For instance, it teaches the pronunciation of several words in each chapter but does not provide the translation for them. Not all of the words can be found in the coursebook glossary and are impossible to find in an Arabic dictionary since they are spelled differently for pronunciation purposes. So the meaning of some words taught in this book remain a mystery. Some of the words this book teaches are also words that would rarely be used. Overall, the book hardly focuses on vocabulary. I do NOT suggest this book to someone who wants to learn a wide range of vocabulary. The book, however, is suitable for someone who just wants to know the very basics of the language and get a clear understanding of Arabic grammar. This book is not complete for someone who intends on learning the language for conversational purposes.

I've been studying Arabic for about 3 and a half years and have checked out most of the other Arabic books that are out there. What I found out is that a lot of the books really focus on grammar and on complex linguistic issues. I wanted a book that would be able to explain grammar in an easy way but to also help me have conversations with native speakers, and to expose me to the Arabic culture. This book definitely meets and exceeds my expectations by being very practical and easy-to-use. I definitely would recommend this book to anyone learning Arabic or who wants to understand Arabic culture!
