The cost of living in Costa Rica is probably the biggest newcomers number 1 question. This book is right on the mark and even gives a break down of how expat couples can live on $1100 per month, comfortably. There are nice small 'Tico' homes in beautiful areas like upscale Escazu that rent for $350./month. I found the 'monthly budget for two people' chart in the book to be a good estimate to go by. He even put $200 per month for food, we spent less than that! Unfortunately, many Americans go down to foreign countries like Costa Rica and live like a tourist, never try to learn Spanish, and basically get ripped-off by the locals who think all Americans are millionaires.

In this book the author states that a couple can live on $1000 monthly. One person alone can barley get by on said amount here. Due to the fact that the author hasn´t lived here for years, he doesn´t really know what´s going on. I´ve lived here for over five years and can attest to the above. I don´t think this guide paints a realistic picture of what living in th country is about.
