Children's Literature - Barbara Wheatley
Kalman, well-known for nonfiction books, delivers another winner with the "Introducing Living Things" series. With colorful labeled photos and drawings, bolded content words in the text, and guided reading levels aimed at first and second grade, these books include excellent resources for younger readers. Complete with a "Contents" page, a "Words to Know" section, and an "Index" page, the books make it easy for beginning readers to locate information. Living things can live as close as the backyard and can be easy to find. Mammals such as squirrels, chipmunks, raccoons, and even skunks are described in the first chapters. Wild rodents such as mice, rats, and rabbits are compared to ones readers may have as pets, along with the dangers they can present. Backyard birds and insects are mentioned along with typical spiders and snails. As each animal is mentioned, the qualities that make them unique and how they help or harm backyards are described. One missing component for this book is a pronunciation for new words, such as tentacles, that would aid the young reader when trying to figure out these harder words. This is an excellent resource for any elementary student or classroom since it combines easy to read text, child appealing photographs, and relevant information. Reviewer: Barbara Wheatley
