Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
An excellent text, written by authorities in the field, on the potentially serious psychological aspects of having a chronic disease. Aimed directly at the asthma sufferer, it includes case studies of commonly encountered problems and discusses family and broader issues that can constrain one's life. (LJ 3/15/98) Copyright 2000 Cahners Business Information.
From the Publisher

"Intelligent, lucid, and extremely readable: The case examples are especially compelling. I am also impressed with the authors' insight and sensitivity, clearly evident in their discussion of the patient-physician relationship. I will strongly recommend this book to my patients." --Philip R. Corsello, MD, FCCP, Staff Physician, National Jewish Medical and Research Center

"The complex interplay of psychological and physical well-being is clearly illuminated in this book, in whose numerous illustrations and examples all readers will recognize aspects of their own experience. Patients and their families will also gain insight into the ways they may be allowing asthma to constrain their lives unnecessarily....Helping patients reduce the adverse psychosocial effects of asthma will be as effective as any current or future medication in enabling them to truly live well." --from the Foreword by James D. Crapo, MD, Chairman, Department of Medicine, National Jewish Medical and Research Center

"This pragmatic book concisely addresses the fundamental psychological issues facing patients dealing with asthma. It moves beyond medical concerns by describing normal emotional reactions to the diagnosis and offering simple, effective coping techniques. An essential resource for physicians, mental health professionals, health educators, and patients." --Pamela Champion, PhD, Department of Psychiatry, Kaiser Permanente Medical Group, Santa Rosa, CA

"Every person with Asthma, including teenagers, and their parents and partners should read this book. The reader will recognize themselves in the many vignettes which are provided for discussion. The authors do a great job of confronting and helping the asthma sufferer and family deal with the many inaccurate negative beliefs one may have about the effects of asthma and its treatment. Many helpful techniques and strategies to change beliefs, self concept and behavior are provided. This guide to living well with asthma will assist the individual with asthma and their families to obtain a happier, fuller and healthier life. I wish every physician would recommend this book to their patients and family members." --Rolf A. Peterson, PhD, Director of Clinical Psychology Training, The George Washington University
