Description: In this book geared for people with diabetes, the author writes about how to incorporate physical activity and healthy eating into daily life. This updates the first edition of 2003.
Purpose: The purpose is to give practical advice to people with diabetes, using a plan dubbed "The Draznin Plan," after the author. People with diabetes are always looking for methods to cope with their condition and this plan offers another one for people to use, if they choose.
Audience: The book is targeted at people with diabetes as well as those at risk for diabetes.
Features: The book is based on the author's own program that uses a different approach to physical activity and meal planning. He breaks things down into "Draznin Miles" and "Draznin Calories," similar to Weight Watchers points. This is a unique way for people to approach behavior change and the author states that over 100 of his own patients have used this method. Although it is an interesting concept, the Draznin Calories do not take into consideration the amount of carbohydrates at meals, the main component that affects blood glucose. Some outdated facts appear in the book, particularly regarding medications, resources, and nutrition research. However, the Draznin Plan may be an interesting option for those at risk for diabetes to help them jumpstart weight loss and reduce their risk.
Assessment: The author infuses the book with humor and it is easy to read. A few new concepts were introduced in the second edition.
