Overview

Book XXI of Livy's history of Rome is one of the most frequently read either in its entirety or in extracts, for it includes Carthaginian campaigns in Spain and Hannibal's momentous crossing of the Alps to invade Italy.

P.G. Walsh's edition is designed specifically for use by students at A-Level. The commentary explains points of historical and literary importance, and elucidates grammatical peculiarities and passages of unusual difficulty. The introduction sets Livy in the context of Roman historiography as a whole, and deals in particular with Book XXI. About the Author

Titus Livius Patavinus (59 BC – AD 17), known as Livy in English, was a Roman historian who wrote a monumental history of Rome and the Roman people: Ab Urbe Condita Libri (Books from the Foundation of the City).

P.G Walsh was Professor of Latin at the University of Glasgow, UK, and elected to the Fellowship of the Royal Society of Edinburgh. He translated The Satyricon and The Golden Ass, and authored Livy: His Historical Aims and Methods (also published by Bloomsbury).
