    I Absolutely Adore This Book

I was first introduced to this book 30 years ago, while in the 1st grade...picture it, Albany, CA, 1979, lol!!!. Seriously though, I was introduced to this book by my elementary school librarian. She read it to our class during our weekly visit to the school library. Until then, I had never seen a book with a black character. The thing that really drew me into the story was the fact that the character was also female. She was funny, smart, independent, and brave. I loved ABSOLUTELY LOVED this story as a child. I still love and read it to this day. I was so disappointed when I read it my daughter, and later my son, and neither really got excited about it. I'm not giving up though, I may have grand children one day, and I can't wait to read it to them. To this very day whenever I read this story to myself, I can still remember how happy it made me as a child.

    A childhood favorite

My father read this book to me and my 4 sisters growing up. We absolutely loved hearing him read it as he changed his voice for each character. Especially when he read the part of Liza Lou's mother in a high pitched voice. One of my older sisters had to choose a book for a school project and picked this one. She recorded my father reading this book in his many voices. Not long after, he passed away from a heartattack. Since then, everytime a grandbaby is born,we buy this book and make a copy of grandpa reading the story as a gift just for them. Now today it is my turn to buy this book for my baby. So she too can enjoy the story of Liza Lou and the Yeller Belly Swamp as grandpa reads it to her. We love you and miss you daddy. And want to say Thank You to Mercer Mayer for all the fun, joys, laughs, and memmories this book has brought to our family, then, now, and forever to come.

    One of my family's favorites

This book has been a family favorite for years. My father always read this aloud to me and my three siblings using a different voice for each of the creatures that Liza Lou encounters and overcomes. It comes to life as you read it outloud. My six year old son loves it just as much as I did. We even had my father record the story so that each of the six grandchildren can listen to him reading it any time they wish. This is a perfect book for anyone, but especially for someone who would enjoy seeing a little girl power at its best!

    A reviewer

I grew up listening to a tape recording of this book by my mother. My brothers and I played the tape constantly because we loved the story. I never actually read the book until I found it here! Now my son can enjoy it as much as I did!

I too, grew up on this book

I cannot remember the first time that my mother read this book to me and I cannot remember how many times I made her read it to me! I too, grew up on this book, and it remains my favorite at the ripe old age of 32. I have the original hardback cover edition of this story and Where The Wild Things Are, and have passed it on to my daughter. She enjoys it as much as I did and even did a project on it for her school reading fair. I can't explain in words how much this story means to me. Hats off to Mercer Mayer!

I grew up with this book

I remember when my mom found Liza Lou in our local library when I was about 8 years old. You'd have thought she'd found gold. You have to understand, we were the only black family in town, and it was the late 70's. To find a well exceuted story about a little black girl in the library was a miricle. We must have read that book a thousand times. The white kids at school made fun of me for being black - yes, N word and all. The teachers did nothing, but let's not go there. My point is that at recess I could hide in a tree from the bullies and read Liza Lou and know that I was ok. Or my mom would read it to my brother and I after dinner. She, Liza Lou, validated my existance. I still have a soft spot for her in my heart. my mom still reads Liza Lou to her first grade students. She calls me when someone, a child or parent, tells her how much they love the book too. Thank you mersa mayer!

One of the best African-American Folk Tales

The first time I read this book I was 12yrs old; my younger sister bought it home from the library. We loved the book so much we had our mother make a xerex copy of the book before we returned it. Now that I am 31yrs old, I would like my 3yr old daughter to experience the same joy I had while reading this book. I recommend this book to people of all ages and races.

    Wondeful book!

This was my favorite book growing up. It is a timeless book that transcends race and gender to demonstrate how a quick witted child survives in her world. The illustrations are fabulous and after 26 years, I am still excited about reading this book. It deserves all the praise it receives.
