Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble
Young llamas don't like shopping any more than human kids do. Llama Llama can't suppress his impatience with the endless aisles, the long lines, and the smells of the Shop-O-Rama. When the little quadruped throws a llama-sized tantrum, his mom calms him down and finds ways to make shopping more palatable for the whole family. A delightful rhymed story for youngsters confronting their first retail experience.
Children's Literature
AGERANGE: Ages 2 up.

The author manages to show a toddler's view of a trip to the store, a trip the little one is not enjoying. After being dragged away from a happy time playing with his toys, Llama is strapped into his car seat, where he takes a little snooze during the drive to the Shop-O-Rama. It does not take him long to get tired of the "Yucky music,/ great big feet/Ladies smelling way too sweet/look at knees and stand in line" and so he, "starts to whine" He is out of sorts as Mama Llama has him try on clothes from the clearance shelves; he has no interest in socks and underwear. Then, as his mama shops for food, Llama Llama gets mad. Finally he hits fever pitch and has an all-out tantrum right there in the store and throws things from the cart. Mama Llama very patiently asks him to stop and explains how much she loves being with him and asks him to help her shop, and that makes all the difference. This story will strike a chord with moms who have been confronted by an overtired child while in the supermarket. The story tells of an everyday event in the lives of moms and their little ones in a way most everyone can relate to and appreciate. Reviewer: Carolyn Mott Ford

PreS-K
In this sequel to Llama Llama Red Pajama (Viking, 2005), the hoofed protagonist goes shopping with his mother. Gradually the small annoyances of the Shop-O-Rama ("Yucky music,/great big feet./Ladies smelling way too sweet....Try it on and take it off./Pull and wiggle,/itch and cough") send the youngster into a tantrum: "It's no fun at Shop-O-Rama./Llama Llama/MAD at Mama!" With admirable patience and parenting skills, Mama tames the "llama drama," explaining to her son that they can make the chore fun by working together. Soon Llama Llama is helping Mama clean up the messy results of his meltdown and complete their purchases, and then they are off to pursue more pleasurable activities. Children will giggle at Dewdney's rhythmic rhymes. The inviting, oversized paintings are bold and colorful, and Llama Llama's priceless expressions carry the emotional arc of the story to its gentle conclusion. Add this amusing tale to your storytime repertoire or recommend it for one-on-one sharing.

Interviews & Essays

What made you decide to write Llama Llama Mad at Mama?

I wrote Llama Llama Mad at Mama? because I knew that all little Llamas have to go shopping with mama (or papa, as the case may be) when they really don't want to, and I wanted to write about it. I also just missed Llama Llama, and I wanted him to have another adventure.

What would you like young readers to learn from Llama Llama?

I hope young readers will relate to Little Llama, laugh at him and with him, and cuddle up closer with their parents as they read together. I hope my books will deepen the relationship children have with their parents, and empower children through that relationship.

Are any of your characters based on you or your family?

I think of my books as "true" stories, meaning that they are based on the real experiences that I've had as a child or a mother. Certainly, I've spent many hours in the big box stores, wandering the aisles, listening to little children scream with frustration in the carts as their parents try to get them to stop. I've also spent a great deal of time with my own children (one of whom hated to shop), shopping on the weekend because I had to work during the week . . . .it's no fun.

What was your favorite book growing up?

My favorite book was probably Higglety Pigglety Pop, by Maurice Sendak. It's not his most famous book, but it is a great work of philosophy! Plus, it has wonderful drawings of Jennie the dog.

You have written as well as illustrated your own books. How do you come up with the faces for your characters?

I'm the sort of person who makes a lot of faces, whether or not I'm aware of it. If I feel something, it goes across myface. When I'm drawing Llama Llama, I imagine how he feels, I make the face, and I draw it. I think I must look pretty funny, alone in my studio, scowling at the paper.

What advice would you give children who aspire to be future illustrators?

Draw, draw, and draw some more! Look at lots of pictures, go to museums, and gets ideas from other artists. Make up stories and draw pictures to go along with them. Most of all, don't worry about drawing or painting the way other people do . . . .in the end, the way you draw is the best for you. Make the best pictures only you can make!

I HATE this book! Horrible message for children!

Why would I want my children to learn that if I take them shopping, and they get mad and throw a temper tantrum, yelling and throwing things in the store, that they will get an ice cream cone afterwards? Llama Llama Red Pajama was really cute, but I can't bring myself to read this one to my children.

I think every mother has experienced a similar experience while shopping with their young child.

This wonderful story helps to put into pespective the frustration a small child must feel when they are taken along to shop with Mama. What I love about these books is the calm and unconditional love and patience Mama Lama has with her small child. When I read these to my granddaughters, they listen intently and smile at the end when Mama Lama and baby are once again happy and enjoying being with each other.

Every mother and child can relate to this story

Another wonderful book by Anna Dewdney. For sure she has been a child; I'm betting she is also a mother. Parents and children will laugh as they read it. The story is acted out in countless "big box" stores by countless people every day. The combination of a mother who must shop accompanied by a bored/tired/restless child for whom the session is lasting way too long. Mama handles the inevitable tantrum with grace and humor. Llama llama learns that it is possible for him to help rather than hinder. Much appreciated, I am sure, by management and other customers. I wish this book was required reading for all parents and children who don't do so well.

    Loved this Book!

I love all the Llama, Llama books. This one is great for my kids as they can relate to llama llama and his tantrums in a store. It shows the kids that they aren't the only ones who get upset and then shows how not to and how to handle the situtation. They just think it is a funny, cute book but they are really learning about social behavior at the same time.

    Fun for all

The Llama Llama series is a favorite at our home. It tells a story about a temper tantrum while out shopping. It has a fun story with a good message for my child. It is rhyming, so keeps my attention as a parent too (which is important as we like to re-read and re-read our favorites!)

    Read it again and again!

My nephew loves this book, and let's face it, so do I. I read this book at least once a day to him, he loves the cute pictures pointing out the different animals, and I like the simple rhymes. The words are easy enough to break down my 5yo niece who is learning to read can read it by herself. If your child enjoys to be read to, and read, this is a must have!

    Llama Llama Mad At Mama

I really do love this book and most of the time when picking out a new book I have to make sure that I like it enough to read it over 20 times a week because like all new things, kids just cant get enough. Both my daughters love the expressions on the characters faces and how much they can relate to the story. Now when we go out shopping in the store and one starts to act up I just turn to them and say "Is someone being a Llama Llama?" and they start to laugh and cheer up. I would go out and buy the whole collection.

Wonderful book for toddlers and children

This is a delightful and wonderfully written and illustrated children's book. When Llama Llama throws a fit after becoming tired shopping at the mall, any adult will really laugh out loud and the accompaning illustrations are great. Children will want to hear the story again and again. Also consider Llama Llama Misses Mama and LLama Llama and the Red Pajama.

    great read for 1st graders

I read this to my granddaughter's first grade class. I had their attention from the very beginning when I said the title "Llama Llama Mad at Mama." I asked them if they ever got mad at their mama and everyone raised their hands. So, I was on a roll, and the kids paid very good attention to the story, laughed at the right times and kind of hung their heads at others. They were all happy to see that Llama loved his mother even if he had to go shopping. They were surprised to find Llama Llama was a boy. It was good for reading to the 1st graders.

The cleaver rhymes and wonderful illustrations are a treat for both the eyes and ears, and make for one excellent story time! Two thumbs WAY up!
